Glossary

 

acids- substance that helps in the breakdown of food for the digestive process

 

digestion- process by which food is changed into substances that can be absorbed and used by the body.

 

large intestine- the final stage of digestion. Water is absorbed and the waste is pushed to the anus.

 

mouth- the first stage of digestion. Contains saliva, teeth and tongue which all help to break down food.

 

oesophagus- muscular tube for the passage of food from the mouth to the stomach.

 

saliva- watery mixture of secretions from the salivary glands that lubricates the mouth and starts to digest food.

 

small intestine- the fourth stage of digestion. Food in the form of chyme enters from the stomach.

 

stomach- the third stage of digestion where strong acid further breaks down food.

 

villi- tiny projections in the intestines from which digested food is absorbed into the blood.
