How Art Helps

Research has found that the arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, music, writing, poetry, dance, theater, etc) have a lasting, positive, healing effect in the recovery from acquired brain injury on all levels:

The Individual
Family/Caregivers
The Community

The healing benefits of art include:
  • Cognitive: Exercising memory, attention, problem solving skills, visual perceptual skills, decision making, and creation of new neural pathways.
  • Physical: Hand-eye co-ordination, dexterity, muscle control.
  • Emotional: Self-expression, improved self-esteem, sense of identity and purpose, reduces anxiety, and enhances relaxation.
  • Social: Increased opportunity for social interactions, practicing communication skills, learning new skills, increased community involvement and networking.

By doing art, the Brain Injury Survivors of AABIS experience these benefits as they express themselves and relearn who they are – their style, interests, likes and feelings.  The art works vary from simple to intricate, without any judgments because each one was created with unique strategies from the artist.  Together they advance along the path of discovery, recovery, and peaceful enjoyment.
