Staff Information

Robert C. Stelzle, MD FACAAI

Dr. Stelzle trained in Pediatric & Adult Allergy/Immunology through a two year Fellowship Program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC from 1997-1999.

After fellowship, he moved to Ft. Gordon Army Medical Center in Augusta, GA to run their Allergy/Immunology Clinic for a couple of years before moving to Rapid City in 2001.  Since 2001, he continues to provide patient care in Allergy/Immunology to those in Rapid City and the surrounding region.

Dr. Stelzle had previously completed a three year Internal Medicine Residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Hospital from 1992 to 1995.  After residency, but before fellowship, he practiced as an army internist, serving his country while paying the army back in "time" for the scholarship that they provided for him to attend medical school.

Dr. Stelzle is the only "West River" Allergist/Immunologist in SD who is actually certified by the American Board of Allergy & Immunology (ABAI).   He is also the only "West River" Fellowship-Trained Allergist/Immunologist at this time. (see explanation below re: ABAI)

Dr. Stelzle considers himself as more of a "rural" specialist than a "national expert" in Allergy/Immunology.  He certainly doesn't know everything about this complex area of medicine.  However, he studies hard to try and keep up with the most current advances in his field.  His efforts resulted in scoring in the 98th percentile (ie: top 2%) on his initial ABAI boards, in 2001, after graduating from fellowship.

Dr. Stelzle's main desire is to try to use what he has learned to help others.  Given the time limitations during a busy clinic day, he tries to delegate part of the teaching process to his very well trained nursing staff.   Further, he sincerely hopes that this website helps you (ie: our patients), somewhat, in achieving this goal.

ENT Surgeons (Otolaryngologists), Family Practice Physicians, Internal Medicine (Internists or Hospitalists) Doctors & Pediatricians have their own residency programs, and prestigious certifying board organizations, but they are not ABAI certified (or even eligible to sit for the ABAI certifying exam, since they haven't completed an allergy/immunology fellowship program).

* Although Dr. Stelzle is no longer an AAAAI member because it is so very similar (and redundant) to the ACAAI (to which he belongs), he still thinks the AAAAI is an excellent organization.  The AAAAI's website  is similar to the ACAAI's site and has a wealth of trusted information.  Dr. Stelzle endorses the AAAAI to the fullest and highly encourages that you visit their website to learn more about your allergic condition.

Our AABH Team:

Tara Young, RN

Tara is the head nurse at AABH.  She basically keeps the clinical aspects of the clinic running.  She has served as Dr. Stelzle's "right hand" ever since he moved to Rapid City over 8 years ago.  He sometimes jokes with her that she could run the clinic alone, in his absence, given her expertise in this area of medicine.

Tara has been providing allergy & asthma care for about 20 years.  Her knowledge and level of experience in this field are really unmatched in our region.  She was in the very top of her class when she initially trained as an LPN.  In 2007, she completed two more years of training (while continuing to work her full time nursing job) to gain her RN degree.  We, in Rapid City and at AABH, are very fortunate to have Tara working for us.

Lisa Uhre, LPN

Lisa is the newest member of the AABH team.  She has faithfully served the allergy patients of Rapid City as a part-time nurse since 2006.  Although she usually only works one day a week through our busy seasons, she has been instrumental in helping to keep the clinic going, especially as a stand in for Tara when she is gone.

In less than two years on the job, Lisa has developed an incredibly wide range of skills in allergy/immunology.  She is proficient at administering immunotherapy via standard and rapid desensitization methods, performing skin testing and interpreting results, coaching in spirometry testing, conducting oral challenges, administering spirometric breathing tests and educating patients on many allergy topics.

Without her help, especially in the busy allergy seasons, the clinic would run much slower and wait times would be much longer.  She has become a true patient advocate and vital member of our team.  AABH, and our patients, are very lucky to have Lisa working for us.

Gladys Hartl

Gladys has been with AABH almost since its inception.  She runs the clinic in terms of all the nonclinical duties.   This is a daunting task but she does it with calm, composure and efficiency.  She's the friendly face at the reception desk, the one who does all the medical billing, the scheduler of appointments, the one you call when you have questions.  She performs many other front and back office operations that go unseen.

Because we are a fairly small clinic, Gladys literally does the individual jobs that multiple workers would do in a larger clinic.  She has worked hard over the years to learn all these different clinic duties and is a great resource for our patients given her extensive experience and knowledge all these areas.

Gladys is a humble but hard working member of the AABH team who comes to work every day to serve you and AABH.  We are very grateful to have her as part of the AABH family.
