Welcome to my Ranger EV Page

The purpose of this site is to document the maintenance of my Ranger EV for my own personal use.  If you find this information of interest to you, you are welcome to browse but  I am not advocating any of the procedures documented here.  Please, use this information at your own risk.
Background:
I first became aware of the existence of the Ford Ranger EV built by Ford from 1998 through 2003 in 1999 while working for Ford as a Facilities Engineer.  The Rangers EV's were offered for lease for around $400 per month.  The specifications suggested they were good for a range of about 55 miles and needed to be charged using a special 220V charge controller.  The specifications didn't meet my needs for a primary vehicle - or so I thought.  I made the mistake of equating the 55 mile range with the 350 mile range I got from a tank of gas.  In reality, Electric Vehicles (EV) live under a different paradigm.  An EV's range is essentially how far you drive in a day.  For over 80% of people that distance is less than 40 miles.  In 2008 I purchase my 1999 Ranger EV on eBay and learned through experience that 55 miles is more than enough range for my lifestyle.  I soon found that my wife and I had to consciously drive our gas powered cars once a month just to make sure the gas in the tank didn't go bad on us before we could use it up.  The convenience of not having to stop at a gas station soon became habit so that we had to remember to check the gas gage when driving our gas powered vehicles or we would find ourselves running out of gas.
It has now been over two years of using our electric vehicle and although there have been times when the Ranger has been inoperative or we have had to drive our gas vehicles because of range, we would not give it up for anything except another EV.  We use our truck in our green remodeling business and for driving around town.  The only time we use a gas powered vehicle is if we are travelling a long distance.
This website is to document repairs and link to groups I am involved in  the Michigan Electric Automobile Association (michiganeaa.org/)

Risks & Issues

The Ranger EV employs a high voltage battery pack that can kill or seriously injure a person or damage property.  Please treat it with the respect it deserves and always follow the manufacturer's safety suggestions, use electrically safe tools and safety practices.  If you are unsure, use caution and consult a knowledgeable person.  Do not attempt a repair beyond your capability.

To quote another Ranger owner which I fully agree with:

"THIS IS MY LEGAL DISCLAIMER ...  DO NOT GO BEYOND  THIS POINT IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THESE ARE NOT REPAIR MANUALS AND I DO NOT PROMOTE NOR DO I CONDONE THE REPAIRS OF RANGERS ANYPLACE EXCEPT FOR IN A LICENSED SHOP ..

THESE VEHICLES ARE ELECTRIC HIGH VOLTAGE VEHICLES, WORKING ON THEM WITHOUT THE PROPER KNOWLEDGE CAN AND WILL CAUSE DEATH .... NOTE THE PART ABOUT CAN AND WILL CAUSE DEATH !!!

IF YOU ACCEPT THESE TERMS YOU CAN GO ON TO THE NEXT PAGES , IF NOT PLEASE LEAVE NOW ......................"
