English Language Arts: All Blocks: Independent Reading:30 minutes daily. Nothing But the Truth Assignments: November 30-December 18 Journal Directions: Please respond to the following prompts in your journal. Each response should include your name, block, date and the journal number. All entries should be word processed, revised and edited. Your completed journal will be due when we finish reading the text. Please note: class time will be devoted to reading, discussing the text and your journal responses, therefore all reflections must be completed for homework. Journal Reflection #1: Write a paragraph to reflect on the National Anthem and its meaning to you and to the country. (See attached words) Journal Reflection #2: Write a paragraph to reflect on rumors in our school. Are they harmless? Do they go too far? Journal Reflection #3: (after reading pages 1-23) What do you think will happen next? Write a paragraph predicting future events in the story. Explain. Also, think about Philip’s behavior in school. Why is his behavior different in Miss Narwin’s class? Does your behavior change depending on where you are? Journal Reflection #4: (after reading pages 24-40) Why doesn’t Philip tell his father the real reason he’s not trying out for the track team? Do you think he is making the right choice? Explain. Journal Reflection #5: (after reading pages 40-84) Whose fault is it that Philip is suspended? Why? Write a paragraph stating you opinion. Journal Reflection #6: Choose a character from the novel and write a diary entry from that character’s point of view. Be sure to discuss the events in the novel. Journal Reflection #7: (after reading pages 85-117) Are any of the facts about what is really happening being changed? Which facts? Who is changing them and why? Journal Reflection #8: (after reading pages 118-144) Think about what you can and cannot do. What do you think about the rules that you must follow at school and at home? Are they important? Why? Journal Reflection #9: (after reading pages 145-162) Take a side in the conflict presented in the book. Write a persuasive paragraph sharing your point of view. This could be written in the form of a petition, letter to editor or diary entry, etc. Be creative! Journal Reflection #10: (after reading pages 163-180) Write a diary entry from Philip’s point of view. Discuss story events. Journal Reflection #11: (after reading pages 181-200) What can Philip do to improve his situation? What would you do next? How do you think the story will end? Math 12/10/09
