The jackleg drill was a technological advancement over the use of hand-held steels and a four to eight pound double-jack(jackhammer) requiring two miners, one to hold and rotate the steel, and the other one to rotate it. The pnuematic drill came into common practice in about 1890. This model sends out a water spray to knock down the silica dust it creates. The first jackleg drills were pnuematic only which created extrememly dusty conditions in the mines. The silica dust killed 1000s of miners earning the drill the nickname "widowmaker" or "orphanizer". In Butte, Montana the drill was named "Larry Dugan's freind", Dugan being Butte's most prominent undertaker.
