- A Cotton linen, silk, or manmade material treated with linseed oil varnish for waterproofing. Used for rainwear.
- Oilskin can mean: *A type of fabric: canvas with a skin of oil applied to it as waterproofing, often linseed oil. Old types of oilskin included:- **Heavy cotton cloth waterproofed with linseed oil. **Sailcloth waterproofed with a thin layer of tar.
- A garment or set of garments made of such cloth
- a macintosh made from cotton fabric treated with oil and pigment to make it waterproof
The old oilskin factory
The MacMullen Oilskin Factory, Barrington, NS, built for James F. MacMullen around 1883. After he died, his son, James Harvard MacMullen, took over the factory and ran it until the 1930's. "Oilskins" referred to oiled canvas foul weather gear -- coats, trousers and sou'westers.

I do have some strange things for breakfast! We have almost a full set of the garden design crockery, I thought the blue plate would look good against the oilskin tablecloth.
