Group Newsletter - January 2012

posted 12 Jan 2012 23:38 by 5th Haywards Heath Scout Group

Dear Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Parents. Happy New Year!

As always, we try to keep you informed of events in the life of the group with this half-yearly newsletter.

Our Scout Section is run by Simon Gankerseer and Liam Gallagher and Emily Ramus. We have Graham Kingsley as Parent Helper and our Young Leaders. Cubs are run by Richard Johnson as CSL Andy Johnson ACSL and Graham Kenwood ACSL, also assisted by their young Leaders. Our Beavers is run by Margaret Barter (Brown Beaver), Helen Thomas (Grey Beaver) along with their Young Leaders.

All of the Leaders and Committee contact details are on the hall notice board at the Scout Hut.

We are now well into the new Scout year and I hope that your young people are enjoying Beavers, Cubs or Scouts. We are sorry that due to necessary building work on the Scout Hut, we needed to rearrange a few evenings during December, just before Christmas. I’m pleased to say that the work has all now been completed.

There will be a County Cub Camp and a District Camp this summer. You will hear all about this in the coming weeks. We will look forward to the lighter evenings and the outdoor activities.

As a Scout Group, so far this Scout year we have already had a number of excellent events including: raft building and racing at Southwater Park; the District ‘escape and evade’; dam building; Remembrance Sunday parade; Swimming; District shooting competition; Police visit and talk; of course, the Beaver Legoland visit; and many other events.

As always there is a packed programme this term for all sections, so please be sure that you know what Beaver/Cubs/Scouts programme events are taking place each week by looking at the programmes listed on our website. Here you will see what they are doing, what they should wear, what they need to bring etc. Also, reminders will often be emailed out prior to events. If you are not receiving these or have changed your contact details please update them on our website www.5hhscouts.org click ‘update your details’.

To find the programmes go to www.5hhscouts.org

-       Then for Beavers click ‘Beavers Home’

-       Then for Cubs click ‘Cubs Home’

-       Then for Scouts click ‘Scouts Home’

Most of the events that the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts take part in, one way or another; enable them to work towards gaining badges. The badges are not usually awarded on the day, but at award days or at other special events. If you (or your boy) think that he is due a badge, please discuss with your leader, as I know that this is sometimes seen as an issue if the badge doesn’t appear ‘on the day’.

Subscriptions

In the next couple of weeks, the second installment of subscriptions will be due. Thank you to all the people who have already fully paid and many that have set up Standing Order payments. I will remind people who have yet to pay or are due to pay the second installment. You will receive a letter shortly regarding subs and explaining our costs.

If you want to know all the payment options, please go to www.5hhscouts.org and click ‘subscriptions’.

If you are not sure if you have yet paid, please send me an email to michael@cedartech.co.uk and I will tell you.

Thank you to all who have completed Gift Aid forms. We will be asking anyone who hasn’t done so, to complete one. Gift Aid raises an extra £16 per young person and without it our subscription charge would need to be increased by this amount.

Our Website

Please take the time to find our website at www.5hhscouts.org here you will find:

  • Beaver, Cub, and Scout programmes
  • Leader Contact Details
  • Our Group Calendar
  • Group News and Announcements
  • Subscription information and forms

Our Website Policy

We may, from time to time have website photos and ‘news’ of activities from our Scout Group (Beaver, Cubs and Scouts). These will normally be group photos, but may also be of individuals. It is our policy to only use first names with no further individual information. We will also sometime have articles in the local news papers under the same conditions.

Group Fund Raising.

It is important for our group to raise funds. The subscription of £90 per year is used to pay our capitation and insurance premiums to national Scout headquarters, Scout Hut rental (including heating, lighting and water), most activities at weekly meetings, equipment insurance, training for leaders, and so on.

So we need to raise money from fund raising events and activities to purchase equipment (for camping, games etc) for our group. Thank you so much for your continued involvement with our fund raising programmes.

Easyfundraising

Here’s an easy way for you to help raise funds for 5th Haywards Heath Scouts

I would like ask you to help us fundraise for our group by taking a very small action whenever you make an internet shopping purchase. As a Charity we are registered with www.easyfundraising.org.uk . You won’t need to register your details or give your email address....we have done it all for you!

Please go to www.5hhscouts.org and click ‘easyfundraising’. There is a simple example of an internet shop at Sainsbury’s, but it works the same for online shopping with Amazon, Tesco’s, Argos, buying insurance, booking a hotel and almost anything online. Please note! You will not buy anything from www.easyfndraising.org.uk . The website will only redirect you to the website that you wanted anyway, and that shopping website will pay our Scout Group (this only applies for charities) a small referral amount via easyfndraising.org.uk. We have raised over £200.00 so far!

Other Fund Raisers

We have a ‘things to hire’ section on the website - If you are (or know someone who is) planning to have a BBQ party or a special occasion this year, why not hire:

·         The Scout Marquee, our Parachute, BBQ’s, various tents, Tipi tent, a 'Colman Event shelter' ,Gazebo, Camping equipment, Fire Grate and Tripod Oven.

·         Or Games equipment, such as giant skittles, bean bags, indoor hockey, marble alley etc.

·         A computer projector and screen

Mid Sussex 0.177 Air Rifle Competition - Nov 2011

posted 21 Nov 2011 06:53 by 5th Haywards Heath Scout Group   [ updated 8 Dec 2011 00:47 ]

Hi Scouts and parents,

The boys did well on Sunday's Mid Sussex 0.177 Air Rifle Competition, and the team came 4th in the district competition.

We had some bad luck when our top scorer Jack B was unable to attend at the last minute so Alex G stepped in after a hard morning of rugby at Crawley. Anyway he shot the second highest score of the day and has been invited to go to the County competition next week!

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Everyone
After looking at lots of holes in score cards I have now completed the results.
This year we have new champions 1st Hurstpierpoint 607 points who have knocked 1st Ditchling off top spot, however 1st Ditchling did come 2nd with 593 and 1st Lindfield A with 581 points. However 1st Ditchling still maintain the highest score in the competition gained last year with 698 points

Maxim 1st Hurstpierpoint
Alex G 5th Haywards Heath
Angus B   1st Ditchling
Jack R  1st Cuckfield

Lets hope they can further improve the Districts position of 3rd achieved on the last 2 years

Remembrance Day Service at Muster Green - November 2011

posted 13 Nov 2011 10:02 by 5th Haywards Heath Scout Group

Thank you to to all the boys and parents who attended the Remembrance Day Service at Muster Green. A beautiful morning was well attended by our Group and many other Groups from the District. Robin Springer, District Commisioner, and a young person from another Group laid the the wreath on behalf of all Scouts.
The only thing that was a bit of a pity, was that the PA system failed to work and so most of the boys struggled to hear the service. Hopefully that will be fixed next year!
