IRWIN ADJUSTABLE WRENCH : IRWIN TAP AND DIE SETS. Irwin Adjustable Wrench
JH Williams Adjustable Wrench This "monkey wrench" style adjustable wrench from JH Williams Tool Co. was probably made in Brooklyn, NY., in the late 1890s. The patent covering this type of wrench appears to be 410,240, issued 1889. This one is in good shape, though when I received it the handle had been repaired with tape due to some cracking, and it had significant surface rust. After brushing down, a few delicate applications of glue to fix the loose handle, and a good oiling, it now works very well. The adjuster is so smooth that if you flick it, it will actually 'glide' on it's own for another 1/2 inch. Adjustable wrench
I always found the common adjustable wrench to be poor in design for two reasons: It's slow to adjust, and it is incredibly ineffective at allowing the user to apply greater pressure around a nut. Usually the means of a gradual system, such as a vice, allows the user to introduce extreme amounts of pressure at the sacrifice of speed, but this device is just slow and inefficient.
