After seeing many and many videos about lathes and woodworking I decided to try how it works: on YouTube this seems a very funny thing. So I placed my old Hitachi screwdriver/drill (it must be more than 15 years old, I inherited it from my father-in-law) into a vice (inherited even this one), took a round piece of wood (the inside of a hole made with a hole saw) and mount it on the drill chuck with nuts & bolt. In this setup there is a big drawback: the wood vein must be parallel to the rotation axis, not perpendicular... Anyway using just sandpaper it works smoothly. Be careful: the sandpaper becomes really hot!. Here I'm trying to make a handle: when it will be complete I'll show you the result.

Although the photo of the drill chuck is not wonderful it shows a couple of important details. The Morse taper on the drill chuck matches the Morse taper in the spindle and drives the drill chuck and also precisely locates it on the centerline of the lathe. The spur center is another accessory that would be used in the spindle of the lathe for a technique called turning between centers. The threaded portion of the spindle is used to mount larger chucks and faceplates. It should be protected from damage to assure accurate work. The owner of this lathe has allowed rust to accumulate in the right angle surface behind the threads. The right angle surfaces are used to accurately locate the accessories that thread onto the spindle. When accessories are removed and replaced, the mating surfaces of the spindle (Inside or Outside) should be inspected and cleaned if necessary. This is critical on a job that needs to be removed and replaced a number of times.
