Desktop Publishing

  • Headings - Help people navigate through a page.  In Wikipedia, anyone can make a change or edit the page.  It is very important to keep headings consistant for visually impaired students (or computer users).  If headings don't stay consistant, the visually impaired person would have to listen to the entire context of the article.  Headings create a structure or a style to your material.  (For this assignment, you only need to use H1, H2, and H3)
    • To use headings: Format --> styles --> choose a heading ( to change the format of the heading, just click modify and you can adjust it.)

Software Options:

There are many software programs that can be used for desktop publishing.  Some examples are:

Microsoft Word- This is perhaps the most widely used software program and has a number of features for formatting text and graphics.  However, it is extremely limited when compared to applications specifically designed for desktop publishing.

QuarkXPress- Used for creating professional quality publications.  Many features make it easy to move and properly align elements onto the page for a pleasing design.

Adobe Indesign- Used for creating professional quality publications.  Can be used for interactive magazines.

MultiAd Creator Professional – Many of the features of the above professional quality desktop publishing software at a much lower price.

iWork- Apple Computer’s suite of applications contains desktop publishing software which integrates with the iLife suite that comes bundled on all Apple computers.

Adobe Fireworks
  • One of the better programs for editing pictures and graphics.
  • With this program you can super impose the image of yourself (taken in front of a green screen) onto another picture
    • Open the folder with the picture of yourself NOT by double clicking, but by RIGHT clicking the photo,  and OPEN WITH Adobe Fireworks
    • Then click on the icon that looks like a MAGIC WAND. If no tool bars are visible, at the top, click on WINDOW then click on PROPERTIES and TOOLS so that hey appear.
    • Using the magic and, click in the green section of your picture, and manipulate the TOLERANCE to ensure the best removal of the green. Then DELETE the green section.
    • You can then drag the background that you want into the same screen as your picture. However the background will be in FRONT of your image. So you must MODIFY and SEND the IMAGE TO THE BACK (this is done while your background of choice is selected.
    • VOILA! You have  your new image! Don't forget to save or EXPORT!

Picasa Web Albums

  • Some good news: Picasa Web Albums provides 1 gigabyte of free storage.  Apparently, that's enough space for about 4000 large size photos.  Additional gigabytes can be purchased.  The cost for 10 additional gigabytes is $20/yr.

Graphics and Publications Assignment-Word 2007 Layering Photo and word art for the cover

  • create a blank cover by inserting a page break at the top of the table of contents
  • insert text box on this new first page and enlarge it by pulling corners until it is almost the entire page
  • insert a picture into this text box, arrange and enlarge by pulling the corners out; it was hard to move it very much
  • click on the picture and insert a second text box onto picture for the word art; it may have a drop down menu from which you choose 'draw text box'
  • draw the text box on the picture where you want the word art to be; make it wide
  • problem: this new text box is white and obliterates the picture
  • solution: make it transparent
    • click on the very edge of this white text box and right click so that a drop down menu appears
    • choose 'format text box', then 'colors and lines' tab, and slide the 'transparency bar' to the right until it says '100%'
    • click 'OK' and you have a transparent text box ton top of the picture
  • insert word art
  • choose word art style and type in your title, choosing font size, click 'OK'
  • play with text box and word art boxes by pulling corners to enlarge (mine tended to shrink to the left and I had to pull both out again...)
  • you can edit the word art by right clicking and editing
  • Just to reiterate: you have a large textbox with a photo with a text box with a word art, one inside the other like 4 nesting boxes
  • oh...one more thing...your text boxes are still black so click exactly on each of them and right click and then choose from the drop down menu 'format text box', 'line', 'color', 'no color', 'OK'

Indexing in Microsoft Word 2007 (For Students)-

Word 2007 has an excellent tool bar. I found in the References toolbar two tabs:  Mark Entry and Insert Index.  All it took was highlighting the desired word in my document, and then, going to the toolbar and selecting the Mark Entry button. You then will see a code appear next to the words that you selected. Do not be distressed, for these marks will magically disappear when you create the index at the end of the task.  Word is just scanning the document and referencing you selected word. The selecting box remains to appear on the screen so that other words can be added.  You can highlight and mark entries as long as your heart desires.  Then, you go down to the section in your document where you want the index to appear and click the Insert Index button on the toolbar.  Word inserts the index.   That is really easy, and this is a great tool for publishing.

Microsoft Word Publishing Tips

While text boxes can be helpful and can streamline your newsletters, headings within the text boxes will not be recognized by the Table of Contents generator. Indexes made with the text box will also not be recognized by the Index generator.
