Storyboard: Indian Ocean Trade The last few days, I've been really interested in the trade routes on the Indian Ocean. Turns out that many east African cities are founded by Arab traders and pirates from India at about the same time that new advances in shipbuilding, mathematics and navigation are discovered/ invented. As each new advance came along, a group of enterprising traders would use the new tech to settle farther south on the East African coast, and leapfrog the last bunch of trader/settlers. In the process they invented Swahili, which is African grammar and Arabic vocabulary. More than 35 cities, including Mombasa, Sofala, Kilwa and Mogadishu were founded this way between the 1st century AD and the 13th century, before the Portuguese and then other Europeans came in and took over. It's pretty cool. I want to make a Flash animation video or a podcast that explains the process, but I think it's going to be quite laborious. Here's my first-draft storyboard for the project. This is in a reporter-style Moleskine, turned to landscape format. Day 333/365 - Off Course!
Day Three-hundred-and-thirty-three ... School was closed today because of the weather so The Boy and I did our usual wanderings, woodland walks, snowman building and, of course, sledging! By the time we were playing at the latter The Husband had woken up (I'll let him off, he's been on nights all weekend!) so we all went out to buy a new bed (like you do!) and then do a bit of late night downhill shenanigans (like you do!!) This particular run I had to leap to safety as The Boy kind of veered off course and headed straight for me - which when you're focusing through a wide angle you realise is a hell of a lot closer than it looks!
