An Adam for me!

(June 27th I am currently waiting the "21" days needed by NI/CC to process my refund to my VISA. In the meantime I stumbled across this site NotionInkScam.)

April 22nd: While waiting for a software update to resolve the Bluetooth, GPS, camera, and other general stability issues, I purchased an iPad2. Here are some comparisons between the two tablets. (I'm not a MAC user so forgive me for any misconceptions in regards to the iPad2)

April 16th: I have been having increasing difficulty with the Adam tablet and have decided to post my ongoing support emails here in hopes that someone may have some insight into situation.

April 02: I have flashed from EdenX to Beast, and back to EdenX. I like how Beast is more like stock Android and feels more familiar. Sadly I have yet to get Line2 to work on any ROM and Beast is yet to support SMS. I'm going to play around with EdenX for a bit, then plan to play around with stock Eden if I have time today.

March 31st
I much prefer EdenX at the moment but that is due to my familiarity of Android.

April 1st (Just flashed Beast!)

Current issues with this setup:
Line2 force closes when making or receiving calls.
GPS working, BUT navigation still not working.
When dialing the SIM number with Gtalk the tablet will ring, but I get disconnected when I try to pick up. I posted a vid on YouTube here.

What is working?
Gmail!
Google Calender!
Google Maps

Seems snappier, and the layout fits the screen better. No more half cut off buttons in Gmail. I can still get the tablet to ring by calling the sim number and the tablet registers a missed call from the number I called it from. I am really starting to wonder what is really preventing this tablet from making cell calls...

Apparently here is where you go when the fit hits the shan...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

March 30th It's here! The long wait is finally over! So what now? Well after the unboxing I played around with the stock ROM for a while, and tested out the buttons and ports. The stock ROM was not bad but as a tablet wihtout an app market, it was severly lacking. So about an hour after I signed for it I had it r00ted and running EdenX found here. As far as r00ting goes this was the least painful yet! (not sure if you could even call it r00ting) It took about 5min to download and extract the file, then about 3min to load it on the Adam.

Now for the bitching!
The SIM and SD card slot doors. They like to hang loose like they are going to open.
ONE DEAD PIXEL! I only notice it when the screen is completely dark though. Update, make that two dead pixels.
No sound from vids (under investigation) Can play music just fine. *Update: It's a crapshoot! .avi .mkv some play, some wont.*
Oh my! The camera is crap! It can't even read QR codes! Very disappointing :( I took off two layers of plastic and I'm dam sure I got them all.
The GPS nav is still not working.
Line2 is still not working. (Line2 support is looking into this, though it's more likely an issue with the Adam and not Line2)

No 3G? *Rogers Only* Manually add an APN with these settings. (use menu button to show add APN button)

Future projects:

Cell standby hack (for non-3G devices only!)

Feb 10/2011: It's been over a year since I first laid eyes on the Adam and now it's here! Well almost...

I just received my email for the second round of pre-orders this morning! I then called VISA and told them about the purchase so they would not flag it. The order process went smoothly, although I was surprised that they wanted my date of birth for the order (ran up a bit of a flag on my end) but I went though with it anyway. I had some trouble entering my phone number on the first form, but eventually got the international format right. The second form got my phone number jumbled up and I had to re-enter it..no biggy.

I read up on what version of the Adam would work with my cellular carrier here yesterday and it was very helpful in confirming that I needed the 850MHz range model.

Unit ordered *Adam Variant: PixelQi LCD, Wifi + 3G (UMTS 850/1900 MHz)*

I clicked submit and got two emails conferming my order. One from "world.ccavenue.com" and one from Notion Ink. The whole process was much smother from what I heard about the first pre-order debacle. Nice work guys!

Feb 10: Charged to VISA $599 USD
Feb 10: Charge reflected on my VISA is $611.79 (exchange rate or foreign currency transaction fee?) I'll let you know when I get the details.
Feb 15: Charge reversed for some reason...funds are back in my VISA account. (not sure exactly when it happened)
Feb 23: Charge on my VISA on Feb 21st $606.19 CAD (ccavenue.com/charge/US MUMBAI$599.99 US DOLLAR @ 1.010333).
Mar 02: Shipping date range changed from between Feb 25th to March 10, to  March 3 to March 10.
Mar 09: An article came in on my RSS feed about a certification delay! *grumbles* Read about it here.
Mar 10: I received this letter today saying that my Adam may be shipped in the next few days :)
Mar 12: Shipping date changed to "Under Process" :D
Mar 22: I emailed support for an update and this letter was a bit of good news.
Mar 25: Shipping email received! But the tracking number is wrong and my Adam was delivered in November? wha?
Mar 28: Shipping number was recycled and now has been updated with the correct information. Status on NotionInk website changed to "shipped".
Mar 28: My Adam is currently in Hong Kong waiting for a flight.
Mar 28: He speaks! for the first time in 26 days Rohan posts and update! And what a mess he had to sort out!
Mar 30: It's here! *w00t* So far it looks awesome!
Apr 02: First email to support.
May 09: RMA number recieved.
July 23: Refund amount of ccavenue.com/charge/US MUMBAI  $549.99 US DOLLAR @ 0.919707 $505.83

Shipping date is now between March 10th and March 16th. I will keep you posted!

ps: I can't wait to root it! Then I'm going to load the Line2 for Android app and see if I can't bring my $90 Rogers bill down to something a bit more manageable. Update: Apparently when the tablet is updated to Honeycomb it will have native access to the Android Market...WOOHOO!

March 02: Rogers just came out with a plan to "share" your data plan between devices. I'm not sure if it is worth the extra monies but I'll look into it.
(Apparently the "share" plans are only available on "select" plans only: $30-1GB/$45-2GB/$60-5GB or bundled with a crappy voice plan).
March 02: Check out this video on screen comparison between the Adam, iPad, and Kindle under direct sunlight.
