- A safety valve is a valve mechanism for the automatic release of a substance from a boiler, pressure vessel, or other system when the pressure or temperature exceeds preset limits. It is part of a bigger set named pressure safety valves (PSV) or pressure relief valves (PRV).

Safety valve assembly
You can see the pieces of the safety valves and how they come together. Screwing in the large vented adjustment piece and tightening down the locknut defines the popping pressure. The small orifice piece screws into the adjustment piece and defines how much pressure is lost before the spring action closes the valve. If you lose too much pressure, you replace the orifice piece with one that has a smaller hole.
Safety valves in place
You couldn't ask for a better fit but it is not an accident. The holes for the safety valves are threaded with the dome in place, by reaching through the dome holes with the tap. A bushing is used to locate the tap centrally in the dome hole.
