One trick that helps me get the filter out of the cannister is to use the back of the ratchet wrench to gently push in while pulling out the old oil filter. Not too much pressure because it is only a plastic cage inside.

Plastic filter wrenches will often slip on a filter that is on too tight. A couple sections of sanding screen inserted in the wrench will take out excess slack and keep the wrench from slipping.
