4e & Me

Forrest J Ackerman

I met Forrest J Ackerman at the 9th annual Science Fiction & Fantasy Art Show in Orange County, CA where I was awarded the Forrest J Ackerman Award for Outstanding Achievement for my sculpture

My husband, Phil, and I went to dinner with this soft-spoken gentleman and congenial host. He was charming, unassuming, amenable and generous with his time. He gave me a red key chain, and printed on it was 4e. With good humor, he talked at length about his experiences, and he loved it.

He invited us to his home, the Ackermansion, in Hollywood, CA for a private tour of his collections of movie memorabilia, masks, costumes, posters, stills, books, magazines, photos and mementos displayed in rooms of his home.

Forry's wife was a quiet lady and after introductions, she left him to do what he did best - talk about his passion, all things scifi and horror.

Besides Bela Lugosi's Dracula ring, of all the many wonderful items Forry showed us, I believe the Amazing Stories magazine was one of his most treasured.

He also opened his home for public tours and I can only imagine that the thousands of people marveled at his collection and stories as we did.

One thing 4e spoke of back then was to one day have a museum to house his collection. I was sorry to hear that part of his collection was sold before he died and the rest auctioned off after his death, the Lugosi ring bringing between $20,000 and $30,000. You can read more at Shock Till You Drop,

Forry Award Winners - Award for Service to the Science Fiction Community.
“Each year since 1966, the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society has presented the Forry Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of Science Fiction. Named after long-time fan and "Mr. LASFS", Forrest J Ackerman, the award is chosen by members of the club during a meeting usually in the mid- to late Fall of each year, and announced at that year's LOSCON. In 2002, over thirty-five years after the award's establishment, the club felt that it was high time that Forry himself receive the award that bore his name.”

The complete list of each years winners is on the LASFS site.
