Brew & Sugar
Brew & Sugar
Bristol Brew and Sugar After a two-year delay while planning wrangles were sorted out, demolition work is now well under way on the further redevelopment of the former Courage's/George's brewery opposite Castle Park. When it's completed in three years' time, the ?225 million Finzel's Reach development will include apartments, offices, shops, restaurants, bars and leisure spaces. Spanning the water from the park will be a 40-metre white steel bridge which will be lit up at night. Although other parts of the old brewery nearer Bristol Bridge have already been redeveloped, this section of the site - which includes the impressive generator building on the Counterslip - has remained empty since the brewery closed its doors in 1999. The new development is named after Conrad Finzel, the wealthy owner of a sugar factory which stood here from 1836 to 1881. At one time, Finzel's was processing some 1,200 tons of raw sugar every week. Much of the vast profit went into financing Muller's Orphanage at Ashley Hill. But it also paid for Mr Finzel's very fine home just off Clevedon seafront, now known as Clevedon Hall. The factory site was later used for the expansion of the next-door brewery. Meanwhile, archaeologists investigating the historic site have found the remains of a 13th-century well, a number of finely-made jugs and a small key which may have been for a chest. They are hoping that the well may contain evidence of the inhabitants' diets. Archaeologist Bob Jones said: 'Finzel's Reach is of significant archaeological importance. Well-preserved wooden barrels found to the rear of one of the medieval properties indicate that tanning was being carried out here, an industry which would have required ready access to water.' It's also been discovered that iron working took place here - an industry previously unknown to the area. Scottish and Newcastle were operating the brewery when it closed. It has previously been owned by Courage's and before that, as I'm sure many readers will recall, by George's.
