The Shelter Begun in 1974, Rosie’s Place provides emergency resources and long-term assistance for poor women who do not have the financial resources to meet the everyday expenses of city life. Rosie's Place was the first drop-in center/emergency shelter for poor and homeless women in the United States . Since then, it has grown, and many things have changed. But, the focus has remained the same:
The mission of Rosie’s Place is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity, and find security in their lives.
Rosie's Place is a community which offers emergency food, shelter, clothing, advocacy, and transitional and permanent housing for women. The center also offers permanent housing for a limited number of women living with HIV. The shelter relies entirely on volunteers and the generosity of donors. It accepts no government funding in order to maintain its independence. An average of 1,000 volunteers provide 54,000 hours of service throughout the year – equivalent to 26 full-time employees. 4Boston's Role Starting in Fall of 2009, Rosie's Place will be offering adult education courses taught by 4Boston volunteers.
