The Program The
Jackson/Mann Adult Education Program serves the residents of Allston-Brighton
and the City of
Boston
. The program
consists of two types of classes. These
two classes are English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED equivalency
classes. Only evening classes are
offered. 4Boston's Role Volunteers work one evening a week with adult students, helping them to pass their GED test or their ESL test. The GED curriculum is math and language-based. The ESL curriculum is centered on improving the students' gasp of the English language through reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar exercises. Volunteers should be prepared to form relationships with the diverse population of adult students based on respect, kindness, and open-mindedness. Volunteers must be both patient and passionate about their work. The volunteer's role includes one-on-one help, tutoring, assistant teaching, and observing the classroom. Hours One three-hour block per week from 6 to 9 pm Monday through Thursday. Volunteers must commit to one three-hour block and continue in that commitment for the entire academic year. Council Member
