House of Corrections

The Facility

The Suffolk County House of Correction is a facility built to detain people with sentences of less than 2 ½ years.  Over the last ten years, the population at this institution has grown from 832 to almost 2000 today.  While incarcerated, inmates have the opportunity to advance both within the penal system and in their own personal lives.  Though all prisoners enter under the maximum security label, they can gain lessened security through good behavior.  Personally, programs such as psychological therapy, addiction therapy, English as a second language, vocational training, and general education allow inmates to be more prepared for their return to the outside world.

4Boston's Role

The House of Corrections uses highly motivated volunteers to help with a variety of programs run from the education department of the facility.  Students tutor and teach inmates in preparation for the GED, in skills acquisition courses (such as computer skills), or in special interest classes for those with higher levels of education. Creativity and dedication are a must in this placement, which, due to the current state budget crisis, is strapped for staff.
