Woven Plastic Placemats
placemats
- A placemat is a protective table pad usually made of paper, plastic or cloth for restaurants and households. Asian-style placemats may feature thin slats of bamboo or colourful beads. The term is derived from the mat being put at a person's "place" (chair) at a table.
plastic
- generic name for certain synthetic or semisynthetic materials that can be molded or extruded into objects or films or filaments or used for making e.g. coatings and adhesives
- Credit cards or other types of plastic card that can be used as money
- fictile: capable of being molded or modeled (especially of earth or clay or other soft material); "plastic substances such as wax or clay"
- A synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers such as polyethylene, PVC, nylon, etc., that can be molded into shape while soft and then set into a rigid or slightly elastic form
- capable of being influenced or formed; "the plastic minds of children"; "a pliant nature"
woven
- made or constructed by interlacing threads or strips of material or other elements into a whole; "woven fabrics"; "woven baskets"; "the incidents woven into the story"; "folk songs woven into a symphony"
- (weave) interlace by or as if by weaving
- (of fabric) Formed by interlacing long threads passing in one direction with others at a right angle to them
- (weave) pattern of weaving or structure of a fabric
- (of basketwork or a wreath) Made by interlacing items such as cane, stems, flowers, or leaves
- (of a complex story or pattern) Made in a specified way from a number of interconnected elements
piecing together the grip
The placemat I am using had a plus-shaped (+) weave to it (the plastic fibers were heat sealed to each other, so it wouldn't unravel.) In order to get the (X) shaped weave I wanted for the grip, I had to turn it diagonally. This meant having to sew some triangle shaped sections to complete the total grip. I suppose I could have just cut multiple rectangular shaped pieces, using maybe two placemats, but I didn't want to waste the material as it cannot be replaced.
Weaving
The weaving I did. I did the row of circles at the top. The ones that are actually round. Yeah, I rule--this is the third time I've ever done weaving. :P
