This year started off with the promotion of scouts to the roles of Patrol Leader (PL) and Assistant Patrol Leader (APL). Each PL, with the aid of an APL, leads a team or patrol of scouts week to week during the year. It is a role with a lot of responsibility but also one with great opportunities. This year Robert Kelly and Jamie Mann were both promoted from APL to PL and Dara Foy was promoted from scout to APL.
Good luck. I'm sure you'll do a great job. |

This week, after completing his training during the summer, Joe Skerrett was presented with the Explorer Award. The Explorer Award is the second of the four major awards available to a scout and signifies that a scout has achieved competence in every aspect of scouting. The next step is the Star Scout Award where these skills are honed to expert level and then finally the National Scout Award where leadership skills are created and improved.
Well done and keep up the good work. |

The 08/09 scout year ended on a high with the safe return of the troop from its annual camp in Lechtal, Austria. This was the troops first time in Austria and the first time it has worked in partnership with Jeka Ltd. The camp was a complete success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Some of the highlights include the ascent of the Steinkar Spitze which, at 2096 metres is the tallest mountain the troop has climbed since it was founded in 1929, the overnight stay in the Landesberger Hutte, white water rafting, canyoning, climbing, shooting, the list goes on. The weather was great, the food was fantastic and plentiful. Overall it was an experience that the troop won't forget in a long time.

The last meeting of the 08/09 scout year finished up this evening with presentations of trophies and cups to various individuals and groups for their achievements throughout the year. First up was the presentation of the County Orienteering trophies. Jonathon Ryan and Brian Flynn claimed second place in the under 16's novice category whilst Dara Foy and Martin Earle claimed first place in the under 14's advanced category. This was a strong showing from the troop and bodes well for the future.
Next was the Troop Challenge shield. This is presented to a patrol for winning a challenge weekend that tests a wide variety of scouting skills. For the first time in its history it was successfully defended by the Tiger Patrol who saw off competition from the Eagle Patrol and Wolf Patrol who were both eager to claim it for themselves.
The Paudge O'Brion Memorial Cup was presented next. This is the scout of the year award and is given out to someone who goes above and beyond what is normally expected and serves and an example of everything that a scout should strive to be. This was the first time it was awarded to somebody who was not a PL or APL. This year it went to the very deserving Dara Foy.
Lastly the Patrol of the Year Cup was presented. This cup has been in the troops possession since its foundation in 1929 and was first awarded to the patrol of the year in 1930. The patrol of the year is the best performing patrol overall. This was the first time this particular patrol has had their name on the cup. This year it was won by the Tiger Patrol.
Congratulations to all those who received awards tonight and keep up the good work. |

Last weekend cubs, scouts and ventures from Mount Argus held a joint camp in Larch Hill to celebrate 80 years of scouting in Mount Argus. The camp began on Wednesday evening when the ventures and scout link lighting a campfire which would be kept burning for eighty hours to symbolise the length of time the group had served the community. It was startling to realise that by the time the campfire was over at midnight on Saturday we had only reached the time that most of the current membership had just joined.
The weekend was a great success overall. The scout troop and the cub pack both arrived on site on Friday evening and spent the weekend playing games, taking part in skills and craft work and generally lazing about in the sun. On Saturday afternoon we were joined by parents, ex-members and friends of the group for the mother of all BBQ's and wound down the evening with a scouts own and a campfire.
A big thank you has to go out to all involved in making the camp a great success. After 80 years of adventure the 45th Dublin, Mount Argus is a credit to those who over the years have worked so hard to make it what it is today. Good job! |
