Homework

The good news about third grade is that the homework is very routine. This will prepare your child well for their upcoming years in school.

At the beginning of the year, students will receive their Assignment Notebooks (ANB). These notebooks:
  • hold your child's 5 Independent Spelling Words
  • are filled out each day, so they have up-to-date info about homework & school happenings
  • need to be filled out by the students each day in order for them to leave and pack up
  • contain their Star Homework slip (see below)
Star Homework Slips are weekly slips that track your child's independent progress with skill work-- reading, math & spelling.

Your child will be working toward 1, 2, or 3 stars a night. When they finish one of the options for the evening, they will circle the star (and fill in minutes read, if applicable).

Every morning, we will be tallying the number of stars and working towards a weekly prize as a class-- the more stars your child contributes, the more our whole class benefits!

Spelling Practice should focus on both Weekly Spelling Words and Independent Spelling Words. Students can practice using any of the suggestions found over on our Spelling Page. If they would like to turn in a sheet, I will happily grade it. If you prefer oral practice as a family, I am a-ok with that as well.

On Thursday evening, students have the option of doing a Response to Text. This can look like any of the following:
              • a summary of what they have read
              • questions, predictions, inferences, connections, etc.
              • a letter to me about the book
              • a letter to the author
              • comparing themselves to the character and writing about what they would have done in the story
              • writing a sequel/prequel
              • or anything else that suits your child's fancy!
This Response to Text should be no longer than a page, but a bit longer than a few sentences. As long as there is substance, I will not be too strict on length.

**Please remember to sign and date the bottom so I know you have seen their Star Homework Slip for the week.

Homework Disclaimer:
Students should be able to do most assignments independently, but feel free to help if it is necessary. If you notice that your child is not able to do an assignment on his or her own, or struggles with a certain section, please jot a note to me on the assignment~ I do not want homework to cause stress! I will contact you if your child is falling behind or turning in poor work. Homework may also include work that was not finished in class that day.

The schedule is subject to change, especially with short weeks, field trips, etc. Please let me know if you have any questions.
