Personal safety

Competitors are reminded that orienteering is an adventure sport and that they are responsible for their own safety when taking part in this event. The competition area is partly exposed mountain terrain. It is susceptible to sudden weather changes. Please ensure that you have adequate protection against these conditions and take special care on wet ground and near crags and rock faces.
At present, whistles should be carried by competitors but are not compulsory. If weather conditions worsen, competitors should be prepared for a “no-whistle/cagoule-no-go” rule. We will attempt to keep this page up to date as conditions change. A first-aid kit will be available at the parking area. Please note that the Country Code must be observed at all times and competitors must report to the finish even if they do not complete the course

SportIdent

Sportident timing will be used. For anyone not familiar with SportIdent, this is an electronic timing system and a demonstration of it in use is available on YouTube. Please print out your entry form here and hand it in to Registrations. To make events easier for all clubs please register your SI card number on the IOA website. For anyone without an SI card, these can be rented on the day for €2 Before starting make sure that your SI card is cleared and checked. The start box must be “punched“ on starting. All control sites must be visited and punched in the required order. A beep records that the SI card has been punched correctly. The SI card must be downloaded on completion of the course.

3ROC would like to acknowledge the support and cooperation provided by Coillte in the holding of this event.

Mapper’s Notes

The map has been extensively revised during Oct. 2010. To aid clarity minimum boulder size is 0.8metre in height (at least one side). Flat rock/ low lying rock is treated as part of the ground and not shown. Areas of dense lowish boulders (where they might interfere with running speed) are shown with the boulder field symbol . Mountain Bike tracks are continuously evolving, only the most prominent e.g where they have been cut through walk/fight are shown. The new track under construction is not shown. Extraction tracks are not shown.

Extensive areas of storm damage are shown as impassible (100% green). Gorse where there is good visibility but running/walking speed is reduced by anything from 20 to 100% is shown by dense parallel green lines on 50% yellow. Stacked brashings in clear fell are not shown as they do not interfere with navigation
