3ROC - Who are we?

Three Rock Orienteering Club has been in existence since 1976 and is one of the largest clubs in Ireland. Its aims are to organise and promote the sport of orienteering.

3ROC organises regular orienteering events which are open to all ages and cater for all levels of fitness. These events take place in parks, woods and open mountainside around Dublin, Wicklow and Louth providing a scenic environment for anyone who likes to be out in the open.

There is also training available for members who wish to improve their orienteering and takes place several times a week with our qualified coach. A number of 3ROC members have gone on to represent Ireland in international competitions and the World Cup series

3ROC Top Irish Team in JK Relays!

The 3ROC men's team of Colm Moran, Andrew Quin and Ger Butler finished in a very creditable 13th place, ahead of all the other Irish teams at the Jan Kjellstrom O-Festival in Northern Ireland at Easter. Other 3ROC teams finished 4th in the Mini-Relay (Cian May, Clogadh Moran and Aidan McCullough) and 4th in the Mixed Ad Hoc class (Mary O'Connell, Clíona McCullough, Eoin McCullough). Eoin also put in the fastest time of the day on his leg. Well done everyone!
In the Individual races we also had some success stories: Frank Martindale was 5th in M75 in the Sprint race at Stranmillis College in Belfast on the Friday; in Saturday's race on the sand dunes at Tyrella, Aidan McCullough was 1st M10B, Colm Moran was 7th M20E, Frank Martindale 2nd M75, Una May 9th W40L. Again, well done. The club also worked on the Day 3 start on Slieve Croob and helped at the Relays at Tyrella on Monday.
It was a great weekend's orienteering, kicking off with the Queen's University Sprint race on Thursday evening and continuing into two events in the Mourne Mountains on the Wednesday and Thursday after Easter.

3ROC and the other clubs who helped got a special word of thanks from JK Start Teams co-ordinator Raymond Finlay (Fermanagh Orienteers) for making the JK such a success. Thanks, 3ROC, and well done!

IOC Successes too ...

Last weekend, 3ROC also took home some prizes from the excellent Ajax-run Irish Championships in Dublin and Wicklow. At the Middle Distance race at Glendoo East (near Johnny Fox's Pub!) Ger Butler was unlucky to be pipped for first place in the M21 Elite race by Bill Edwards. Meanwhile Aidan McCullough took 2nd in M10, his brother Eoin was 3rd M18A, their father, John, 1st M55 and sister Clíona 1st W16A. Frank Martindale again featured, with 2nd place in M75 and Seán Rothery 3rd M80. Una May was 1st W40L, Mary O'Connelll 2nd W45L, Monica Nowlan and Aine ní Shúilleabháin were 2nd and 3rd W60L.

In the Classic Distance race at Brockagh on Sunday, the Juniors again did well: Aidan McC 1st M10, Clíona 1st W16A, Cian May 3rd M12, Clodagh Moran 3rd W12. Her brother Colm was 1st M20A, Ger Butler took his second silver of the weekend in M21E, with a great run of 97.38 for the 15.3 km course, Una May again 1st W40L and Mary O'Connell 2nd W45L, Nora Lee in a comeback was first W50S and Brigid Flanagan 2nd W65L.

In Monday's Irish Relays the Men's team of Colm Moran, Kyle Heron and Ger Butler ran a very consistent race to finish 4th; the McCullough team finished a close 2nd in the Handicap 12 class. As it turned out, we could have entered a Junior Under 36 team but we shopuld manage it next time: Sorry, Aidan, Clodagh and Cian!

You can see all the Irish Champs results and courses etc here.

The next big outing is the Inter-club Championships on June 19th, run by GEN at Carrickgollogan, Kilternan - see you there! Before that it's to West Cork for the Shamrock O-Ringer - entries extended to May 15th. Details here.

JK and Irish Championships NEWS 21 April 2011

We have entered four teams for the JK Relays: A class (JK Trophy), two Mixed Ad Hoc (Class N) and one Mini Relay (Class M). John McCullough has the details - contact him at the JK to get your team numbers etc. See the JK2011 web site here.

Irish Champs Relays: We have five teams: Open, two Handicap 12 and two Handicap 18. Again, contact John for details. See the IOC 2011 web site here.

Good luck to all the 3ROC runners at JK and IOC, and to all the helpers at the JK. 3ROC are helping run the Red start on Slieve Croob on Easter Sunday (with GEN), but our involvement doesn't end there. Behind the scenes we also have Ronan and Julie Cleary (IOF Advisors for the World Ranking Events), Mike Richardson (Sprint race Controller), John McCullough (Relay Assistant Controller), Harold White (JK Coordinator) and Alan Gartside (Trail-O and TempO planner and organiser).
It's promising to be a great weekend's orienteering!
