Thank you to the (small) mums & dads army who have cleared the Scout compound of leaves.  Also to those brave fellows who climbed ladders to clean gutters and gullies.  Watch out for requests for more work later in the season!

Dad's Army Work Morning

posted 20 Feb 2010 08:05 by Brenda Davies   [ updated 20 Feb 2010 08:09 ]

Calling all parents of members of 3rd Sandhurst Beavers, Cubs and Scouts

There is work to be done to ensure the Scout Hut and the compound is in a safe and suitable state to allow the youngsters to fully enjoy all that Scouting has to offer.  Arrangements are in hand with a team of volunteers to have the interior of the building redecorated, which is brilliant.  That leaves much still to do outside in readiness for the coming outdoor season.  To this end I am calling upon willing adult volunteers, who I am now calling Dad’s Army (and Mum’s can join in too), to get as much done as possible on

 Sunday February 28th, between 10am and 1pm.

 The essential outside jobs are:

  • Clear all the collected rubbish, debris and unwanted undergrowth from the ground
  • Remove all rubbish from the compound, ie take to the tip
  • Restack the woodpile and brick pile
  • Clear the leaves and branches from the building roof and clear the gullleys
  • Clean out the gutters
  • Relocate the gas cage to a safe situation
  • Clean the windows

For all the above we need manpower equipped with garden tools and gloves (BRING YOUR OWN)

The nature of this work and the tools required make it an adults only task, hence “Dads’s Army”.

It is outdoor jobs only since work on preparing for redecoration is likely to be taking place inside on this workday.

Howard Heyd will be coordinating this Work Morning and I expect to hear from him that plenty of help turned up.

Yours in Scouting

     Brenda

Link with Leverkusen Scouts

posted 29 Oct 2009 12:13 by Brenda Davies   [ updated 16 Nov 2009 10:59 ]

As a result of Bracknell being twinned with Leverkusen, near Cologne, Germany, a firm link has now been made with the Leverkusen Scouts.  This is happening through 3rd Sandhurst since Freddie has combined his own interests in the Twinning Association and his Scout Group! The first International Meeting in the process of arranging joint camps and other activities was recently successfully undertaken by a team from 3rd Sandhurst, Richard Price and Peter Forbes.

Eleven Leverkusen Scout and Cub leaders from the Orion Group came for a three day visit in October, camping at Earleywood in their black tent.  On arrival they where treated to a traditional English Fish and Chip supper.  For their troop night 3rd Sandhurst Scouts joined with the Germans and worked together to build a good sized campfire and shared songs around it. Maybe not the most ambitious programme in the world but it more than achieved the aim of bringing the two groups together.  The main event for the meeting was a guided minibus tour of Bracknell and the surrounding area, hosted by Leaders and supporters from 3rd Sandhurst. The tour included Runways End Campsite, Horseshoe Lake, 3rd Sandhurst HQ and the many attractions Bracknell has to offer. The day and, indeed the visit, was rounded off with a meal together before we waved Auf Wiedersehn to our new friends.

As a result of our meeting a date has been set for a party of Scouts to come from Leverkusen to camp at Earleywood at the beginning of the summer holidays. The aim is to have Scouts from 3rd Sandhurst and District camp with them for a few days sharing Scouting activities. Hopefully 2011 will see a trip to Leverkusen for our Scouts.

Parent and Child Camp 2009

3rd Sandhurst were well represented at this years Parent and Child Camp held once again at Earleywood.  The theme of the camp was let’s Go Enviro-mental, which lead to the sub theme of Saving the Rain Forest for us.  The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and their Dad’s (and a Mum) all worked together at all the camp challenges. A magnificent Environmental House was built and equiped with environmentally friendly gadgets.  The Trading Post competition stretched imaginations and even culinary skills, requiring a cake to be baked.  Camp decorated biscuits representing Planet Earth where the culmination of a very tasty banquet.  Dressing up as trees and singing at the campfire was all part of the weekend which earned the contingent a whole host of certificates and prizes, plus a plaque for being the Overall Competition Winners.  Well done to all who took part!
