Bought this bike in 1988, when it was a red Dawes Galaxy. It's also been blue. The only original stuff left on it is the Sakae crankset and the Suntour gear levers. Rode it for years with the horrible steel wheels and bargain-basement Shimono mech, but then the upgrade fever started. It's just had new wheels, Campag Omega rims on Chorus hubs, and they spin and spin and spin. Ultegra and Shimano 600 mechs, Tektro deep drop brakes. And handlebars: one boiling day a few years back I was riding in the wilds of Dorset when the left hand brake cable snapped, and then five minutes later the right hand lever broke in two. Looked around, no human habitation in sight, except ... a bike shop! Some kind of out-of-town bicycle emporium. The guy only had MTBs and such, but he delved into the back and came out with a set of Dawes-branded lightweight randonneur bars complete with lovely drilled levers: no use to me he said, you can have that for a fiver. So they are all still on board. It's just a hack in 531 touring steel but I've ridden many thousands of miles on this bike, I've got used to it, and even if it does look funny with 700c wheels on a frame made for 27 inch, I love it.
First Time on the Square
First Time on the Square
Army cadets on the parade square for the first time at Altcar Training Camp. They have practiced basic foot drill in their respective units and now is the first time en masse with lots of space around them. They have just been told to form a straight line. Heads are turning left and right. Quite difficult if you have not done it before. I was going for that classic depth of field effect. Set the aperture to f/4 and made sure the image stabilisation was on. Unless I am taking a long exposure, I invariably use auto ISO. I set the focus point about a third of the way along the line. Unable to remember which focus mode I was using. Took a few frames and this one turned out alright. Pity the focus did not fall on the lad with the artillery cap badge, three faces along. Nikon D3, Nikkor 70-200mm f/2ยท8 G. 1/250s, f/4, ISO 900, 125mm, hand held.
