CRESCENT WRENCH SETS : SMALL SCREWDRIVER SET. Crescent Wrench Sets
Wrench Types TOP is a 10” Monkey Wrench with a fixed upper jaw and parallel jaws for heavy torque on nuts. Most people today would use a Crescent wrench instead, which is why these are getting harder & harder to find. This is a 10” COES with a wood handle. MIDDLE is a 4.25” Adjustable Spanner. Descendant of the monkey wrench, more compact and exacting… note the measurement scale on this Billings & Spencer model presumably used to set the opening. Most households in North America have the more sleek & modern (boring) version that I know as a Crescent wrench. This particular guy has a fixed lower jaw like a Stilson, but the 90 degree parallel jaws of a Monkey so IMHO probably okay calling it a Monkey Wrench. Lots of people refer to this style as a bicycle wrench too. BOTTOM is a 7” Stilson Pipe Wrench, albeit an unusually small one with some of the wood missing from his handle. Note it is the upper jaw that moves and that the jaw(s) are curved with teeth… much better for rounded or imperfect surfaces. Like most people, I grew up calling this a monkey wrench. I’ve seen them as long as 4 or 5 feet, especially on vessels. I think wood handles are fairly rare for Stilsons. All measurements are the fully-closed overall length. Stronglight 49d bolt set
On the Stronglight cranks the "nut" must enter from the chainring side. On TA cranks the bolt hole is a smooth 7 mm. bore all the way through and the slotted nut may enter into the chainring from the back. Notice the "rounded" (damaged) heads on these bolts. This was far too commonly seen. Many local bike shops ( or home mechanics) lacked good metric wrench sets so the alternative was the ever present adjustable Crescent wrench, and those were commonly just too loosely adjusted. This damage made the bolt heads all the more impossible to hold later with a proper sized wrench. The wave washers shown here were also lacking from the original bolt sets. To this day, a friend curses the bolt sets and even the cranks after losing a few correct bolts on his track bike because of simple vibration. Replacement bolts were near impossible to source at some small bike shops in the US. With "convenient" replacement bolt sets substituted, both the chainring and crank arm holes soon ovalized and were completely ruined.
