After withdrawal

After withdrawal in March 1965 Sidmouth was taken to Woodham's scrap-yard in Barry.  As is well-known, the owner of the yard decided not to scrap the many locos he'd bought (reportedly because wagons were simpler to scrap) and over the next 20 years almost all of the steam locos stored there were bought for preservation.

Sidmouth is currently in pieces which are spread across several sites.  It's probably the last restorable Bulleid Pacific, and there's a lot of work to be done before it'll be seen operating again.

In 1982 Sidmouth was purchased privately and taken to the North York Moors Railway to await restoration.  Little restoration work was done and in 1997 Southern Locomotives bought Sidmouth and sister loco Eddystone and moved them both to Sellindge in Kent.  Eddystone was subsequently restored and is currently running on the Swanage Railway
