Mr. Davis teaches 6th grade Social Studies. His project, "Are We Free?", investigates the connection between personal freedom and the responsibility to work for the freedom of others. Mr. Dell'Aquila teaches 6th and 7th grade English Language Arts to special needs students. His project, "Killing Ignorance", is a documentary that addresses the genocide in Darfur in the context of his students' reading of Number the Stars and genocide around the world. His students created a video invitation for New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof (www.dearmrkristof.com), and Kristof will be joining Dell'Aquila's presentation via Skype at 2:20PM. Her project, "Rights Gone Wrong", imagines what American life would be like without the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Her students designed comics about the Bill of Rights. Act.", asked students to direct a documentary about a human interest story. Examples include a documentary about the proposed ban on fast food restaurants near public schools in New York City, redevelopment of the 149th Street / Third avenue Hub, and student awareness of the Darfur genocide. Their project, "Is Change Possible?", analyzes the connection between math and English in the context of eight different social issues worldwide through news broadcasts. Her project, "Prejudice and Persuasion", responds to the themes in Number the Stars through public service announcements that address social issues. Her project, "Putting a Down Payment on Future Success", aims to prepare students for the future by designing a Future Success Plan. Among other activites, students identified their desired professions, calculated projected income, designed budgets and developed a savings plan. Her project, "Warning Label", is a student-produced documentary about special education. Her project, "Solving the Problems of the World", applies the scientific method to big problems ranging from germs to pollution. Students designed Google Presentations to present their findings. His project, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses..." examines the immigration debate in the United States. His students produced public service announcements about this issue.
