Project Description:

How does art connect to literature?

It is obvious that visual culture impacts how a middle school student will design and interpret illustrations in literature.  Students will design a book cover for a book they read in their book club and/or a book they have read in English Language Arts.

To support the essential question, "How does Art Connect to Literature?", Mrs. Nolan-Carozza's art classes visited the library and Mrs. Reiss explained the history of the Caldecott Medal to them.  The students viewed different illustrations of book covers for the same book.  Two examples were, "The Moves Make the Man" and "Tom Sawyer."

To differentiate the project, each student will choose the medium to work with. The choices range from pencil sketches, black & white marker drawings, tempera paint, watercolor, colored pencils, marker renderings, and collaging.

As an extension, students will be encouraged to design the Caldecott Medal for the book cover contest as well as a promotional poster for Dot-to-Dot. Selected works will be scanned and be viewed online.

Students will blog about, respond to, and comment on the artwork.
