Chicken Creek Cafe, Chicken, Alaska

Chicken Creek Cafe is the only restaurant in town. The lunch I ate here was absolutely wonderful, and I loved the atmosphere. During my visit I was the only customer for the owner and sole employee who called himself "Gary the Cook." Gary told me he gets his fill of people during the busy summer season here in Chicken, so he spends the remaining eight months of the year alone in a cabin up near the Arctic Circle. When I asked how he entertained himself he said he did a lot of camping. He likes camping in winter because there aren't many bugs at 40 below zero. "But it's not as rough as you might think," he said, "because I'm well equipped and have a propane heater in my tent." My cheeseburger was exceptionally good, thick and juicy with lettuce, tomato and mayonaise (hold the onion) on a butter toasted bun. The potato salad wasn't bad either. The meal filled me up to where I honestly didn't have room for the homemade pie: apple, blueberry or cherry. The pie looked delicious and if I'm ever back in Chicken I'll definitely save room for a slice.

Pardong the mess ;-D Lodging inside Yosemite is pricey. A night at Yosemite Lodge costs around 200 bucks a night and around 400 for a room at the Ahwahnee. Next to pitching your own tent, this tent cabin probably is the next cheapest thing. The cabin is pretty basic: canvas over wooden frame. There's bed inside to sleep maybe 4-6 people. I had a cabin with a propane heater but there are ones with no heat. I'd bring a nice warm sleeping bag if you get one of those. The shower and toilet facilities are outdoors and as far as I know aren't heated so you may chill your butt a bit when answering those late night call of nature. So, what did I think of my experience at a tent cabin? I liked it. Since I was up early to shoot and usually returned late at night, it was nice having a place inside the park to take long naps when the light outside was just too harsh for shooting.
