How Long To Cook A Turkey In The Oven : How To Cook With Herbs How Long To Cook A Turkey In The Oven
Thanksgiving Traditions Illustration by Rocky Wu / Courier Turkey Day Festivities Bring Inquiry into the Origins of the Feast Christian Daly, News Editor A preheated oven usually warms the house on Thanksgiving Day. The kitchen is crowded as the family cooks swarm around prepared and unprepared food. The sound of a football game fills the room in hopes of keeping a hungry mind occupied. A roasted turkey with trimmings fills an empty stomach, but not a curious mind. With the turkey, football games and of course the Macy’s Parade, many don’t get a chance to wonder how these traditions began. “I have never really thought about it,” said Maribel Lopez, a psychology major. “It’s tradition.” Thanksgiving, a U.S. national holiday, was set aside to commemorate the Pilgrims’ celebration of the harvest collected by the Plymouth Colony in 1621. The festival of the harvest was brought on because the previous winter was one of intense starvation and death. Many school plays portray the Pilgrims along side the Native Americans celebrating the harvest, but did that really happen or is it just holiday stuffing? “I don’t think I have heard about that. All I remember is the Pilgrims and the Indians fighting,” student Eddie Armenta said. According to the Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia the Wampanoags, a neighboring tribe that outnumbered the colonists, joined in by contributing food to the celebration, making it the first Thanksgiving, a three-day feast. Lately Thanksgiving has been reserved for family get-togethers and a chance to catch up on a home-cooked meal but originally it was a day dedicated to prayer, not feasting. Turkey was informally chosen to be the holiday’s main dish as a reminder of the wild game the Pilgrims served at the first celebration. “It’s a big bird … turkey doesn’t get boring. I have never thought of any other bird being the tradition. I never really thought about it but I wouldn’t change it,” said Kat Peterson, PCC student. In the late 1930s and early 1940s President Franklin Roosevelt declared Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the next to last Thursday of November, but pressure came from Congress and state governors and the Thursday was switched to the fourth in the month. “The most ideal day would be on a Wednesday. It’s in the middle of the week and you could get the whole week off,” said Lopez. “I don’t mind it being on a Thursday. as long as I can get with my family its fine,” she said. Regardless of traditions and history, one aspect of Thanksgiving seems to have woven its way in : family. “The best part of Thanksgiving,” said Peterson, “is spending time with my family.” mmm food
