Show extended through October! “2-Story City” is inspired by daily life in
Chicago's neighborhoods. Featuring paintings by Emily Rapport and photography by Andrew Steiner. Selections from the show will be on view through October 31st at The Leadway Bar and Grill, 5233 N. Damen Ave.
Painting and photography tend to have separate galleries that specialize in their respective markets, but in terms of art history, painting and photography are inextricably linked. Photographers were influenced by a painterly aesthetic and still-life composition, as well as uninhibited about arranging their subject matter (even in “documentary” situations). Impressionist painters were also clearly influenced by the advent of photography as can be seen in the tightly cropped, modern compositions of Degas, Cassat and others in which the point of view hinges upon the action of the moment. These photographs and paintings record a facet of our stories. Mr. Steiner's dynamic compositions frame downtown immigration rallies, Devon Avenue street festivals and candids of passersby. Ms. Rapport's expressive, fluid paint style imbues the familiar with a sense of spirituality in depicting neighborhood homes, fast-food restaurants and street scenes.
