November 20, 2009

Lunch today:

Pizza or Tenderloin

Athletics:

ü  There are still order forms in the high school office for those interested in purchasing an Athens letter jacket.

 

ü  The boy’s basketball team will host a Meet The Team Night on Saturday. The JV will play at 5:15, followed by an alumni game. The varsity game will tipoff at approximately 8:00.  Admission will be $1.

 

ü  Returning softball players will receive information from Coach Szoke  on working the concession stand at the Warrior Classic on November 28. Please turn in forms by Friday to Mr. Jamerson.

 

ü  Any freshman softball player or any student that didn’t play softball last year that is interested in playing this season can pick one of these forms in the office.

 

ü  The Cross-country awards will be Tuesday at 5:30 in the High School library.  All uniforms and sweats should be turned in prior to that time.

ü  The junior class will be selling concessions at the Warrior Classic next Tuesday, November 24.  Any junior who wants to help should sign up for a shift on Ms. Lessen’s door.

ü  The Athens FFA participated in the section 14 Agronomy Contest at Williamsville last night.  The participants on the team were Elise Tomlin, Zach Brown, Alec Hobbs, Jacob Mueller, and Toby Yager. The team placed 1st out of 8 teams with Toby Yager placing 1st individually and Alex Hobbs placing 6th.

ü  Sophomores – Did you forget to buy a class T-shirt?  Get one today for half price.   You can get a class T-shirt for only $5.  Come by the library and get one anytime this week.

 

ü  Please pick up your picture retakes and student id’s in the office today.

 

ü Seniors-Jostens will be here on Wednesday Nov. 25th to take your graduation announcements and cap and gown package orders.  Please bring your completed form along with a $60.00 deposit.  Remember this is next Wednesday.  There are extra information packets in the office.

 

ü  Trying to figure out a career you are interested in.  Juniors have the opportunity to go to Lincoln Land to explore various career pathways.  To sign up, please fill out a survey and you are set to go.  Please see Mrs. Benz for further details.  The Pathways to Your Future is on January 7, 2010.

 

ü  Don’t forget to stop by Barnes & Noble on Sunday.  Get an early start on your Christmas shopping or get your parents in to buy something for you. Grab something to eat or drink in the café and get entered into the raffle for prizes.  Don’t forget to bring in hats, gloves or scarves to receive HW passes that can be used for cardio day!  See you Sunday!

TONIGHT the drama club will host the Jason Linett Comedy-Hypnosis show at 7pm in the main gym.  Tickets are $8.00.  Concessions will be sold starting at 6:00pm.  Come hungry for Italian Beef, Sloppy Joes, and a real good time!

ü  There will be Drama Club meetings during both study halls today.  Even if you are not going to be able to attend the fundraiser, still come to one of the meetings.  The first meeting will be at 12:15 during the first study hall.  The second meeting will be at 12:30 during the second study hall.  Please try to make it to one of these meetings.

ü  Imagine a world where everyone around you believes themselves to be monster shrimp attacking you with cocktail sauce.  Imagine a world where every time you hear the phrase “Bon Appetit” you believe your arms to be actual spaghetti noodles.  When dealing with hypnotism, anything is possible.  This year’s drama club fundraiser will be tomorrow night at 7:00pm in the main gym.  Remember, any person who buys a ticket could be, but is not required to be, hypnotized.

The Athens football team will have its annual banquet next Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00 pm in the high school gym.

Clubs:

Think it would be funny to see your favorite history teacher pretend to be Lady Gaga?  Would you give a chuckle to see your best friend think they’re the fastest, sneakiest squirrel in America?  If you’re prepared to laugh and have a good time, then look no further.  The drama club will host its fundraising event, a comedy-hypnotism show on Tuesday November 17th at 7pm.  Doors and concessions open at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $8.00.  Remember, anyone could be hypnotized!

Mark your calendars for the Barnes and Noble Book Fair on Sunday, November22.  Be sure to make a reservation for the café and don’t forget to bring in hats, scarves, and gloves to receive a hallway pass.  You may still order cheesecakes this week as well.

ü  The Volleyball Awards Banquet is tonight at the Blue Duck at 6:30 p.m.  Cost is $8.  RSVP to Coach Wible with how many in your family will be attending.

 

Organizations:

ü  The Athens FFA competed in the District 3 Ag Sales Contest last night and won first place.  They will advance to State this Saturday at Parkland College in Champaign.  Congratulations to Kristen Faucon, Lyndsey Heffner, Kayla Hinrichs, Austin Montgomery, and Elise Tomlin on the first place finish!

 

ü  Any Drama Club members wishing to hang or hand out fundraising posters need to see Mr. Tarrillion TODAY.  Students who would like to sell tickets prior to the event should see Mr. Tarrillion as well.

This year’s Leadership Committee Veterans Day assembly is being held at Cantrall Intermediate School on Tuesday. Any high school student with a relative that is attending – may attend as well – please see Mr. Tobias by 2:00pm TODAY.

The following students need to see Mr. Tobias during Study Hall today: Nic Kotty, Kayla Sagritalo, Ted Doellman, Patrick Richardson, Alex Martin, Nicole Toohey, Kristen Faucon, Kayla Hinrichs, Nate Pierce, Kathryn Elzerman, Lauren Bulinski, and Peyton Crowe.

Today and tomorrow from 2:30-4:00 p.m. FCCLA will be making Christmas stockings for soldiers.  We will be learning how to felt the stockings out of alpaca fleece.    Other stockings will be made with the sewing machine.  You do not have to have sewing skills to attend.  Come and help us support our soldiers.

Enjoy being the center of attention?  Like to partake in crazy, funny adventures?  The wait is over.  Your perfect night is coming!  Tuesday November 17th at 7pm, the

 Drama club will host a comedy hypnotism show in the main gym.  Concessions will start at 6pm.  Any person who buys a ticket is eligible to become the star of the

 show.  Tell everyone you know because it’s going to be a blast!

The sophomores are selling black and green Athens Warriors lanyards for $3.  See Dustin Asbrock, Kelsey Penrod, Lucas Brown, Kayla Sagritalo, Nicole Toohey or Mrs. Swaney in the library to purchase one.

 All basketball cheerleaders (JV & Varsity) need to pick up a picture order form from Ms. Bice as soon as possible.

Memorial Medical Center is canceling the Explorer Post meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on November 5 in the Wedeberg Conference Center. The cancelation is intended to minimize the spread of germs and protect the health of Explorer Post participants during flu season. Please watch for information about the December meeting.

The boy’s soccer awards dinner will be held at Sam’s Too in Sherman on Tuesday November 10th at 6:30.

High school boy’s basketball conditioning for Wednesday and Thursday at 3:30 in Multi. Bring money for shoes and first practice is 6:00am on November 9th.

The swim team won their meet last night defeating Macomb and Routt Catholic.  Porta 117  Macomb 103  Routt Catholic 100 Laura Penrod placed 2nd in breaststroke.  Your welcome Laura!  Ally Brown swam backstroke and Danielle Gerard breaststroke. The medley relay of Gerard,Penrod, Brown placed 4th.  The 400 free relay of Brown and Penrod finished 3rd. Our last home meet is Thursday night against Springfield High at 4:30.

There will be a short drama club meeting after school today in Mr. Tarrillion’s room. Everyone in drama, please attend because we will be discussing our fundraiser!

Attention Students: Ever wonder what it would be like to see your best friend walk and cluck like a gangsta chicken or see your favorite teacher perform a toe-twirling ballet? Well, wish no further! The end of the year golf awards will be tonight @ 6:30 at Country Hills Golf Course. Refreshments will be served. Golfers will need to bring their bags and windshirts. There will be no golf due to the forecast of rain that day.

There will be a girls basketball meeting today during 5B in the conference room.

The volleyball team earned win #22 of the season in a regional quarterfinal win over Calvary last night. They then turned around and won match #23 with a 25-20, 25-20 win over Edinburg in the regional semifinals. Athens will now face AC Central in the regional championship match at 5:00 on Saturday in Ashland.

TMD members who are planning to attend the activity Saturday at 6:00 pm need to sign up in Mrs. Emery’s room today.  If there is not enough interest the activity will be cancelled.

All current and new NHS members will have ceremony practice on Monday during both lunches.  Bring your lunch to the library and plan on a working lunch.  Reminder that the ceremony will be on Monday, November 2 at 7:00 in the library.  You should be here at 6:30 that evening.

The Cross-country team travels to Elmwood tomorrow for their sectional race.  Both boys and girls team qualified for this race.  Bus time is 7:45.  Good luck to both teams.

 We will dismiss students from class at 2:45 for the pep assembly today for Cross Country and Volleyball. Band will dismiss at 2:35.

All band/chorus members need to remember to bring dessert for the chili supper tonight.  Dinner starts at 5:00.

Nov 4th & 5th 2:30-4:00 p.m. FCCLA will be making Christmas stockings for soldiers.  We will be learning how to felt the stockings out of alpaca fleece.    Other stockings will be made with the sewing machine.  You do not have to have sewing skills to attend.  Come and help us support our soldiers.

Thanks to all who donated and participated in the Athens Leadership committee car show.  We had 20 vehicles show and we made roughly $250.00.  Thank you for making this year’s car show a success, and we are definitely having another one next year

 Congratulations to both the boys and girls Cross-country team.  Both qualified for sectionals this Saturday in Elmwood.  Veda Dixon finished first for the girl’s team followed by Lindi Andreason, Tasha Bryant, Paige Henninger, and Alexis Gifford.  The boy’s team of Patrick Richardson, Austin Montgomery, Jace Meints, Ted Doellman, Andy Wilson, Anthony Herr, and Will Myers had a great race on a very muddy course. 

All varsity cheerleaders need to see Miss Bice by the end of the day today about shirt sizes.

Any NHS applicant who would like to discuss their recent denial or acceptance into NHS this year should see Mrs. Swaney.  Those who did not make it this year need to find out why so they can make attempts to fulfill the requirements for next year.

The swim team defeated Jacksonville last night 111-49. Ally Brown did a best time in the 50 free placing 2nd to her teammate.  Ally also placed 2nd in backstroke.  Laura Penrod placed 2nd in both the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke.  Danielle Gerard placed 3rd in backstroke.  Rachel Kugler took almost 6 seconds off her 200 free time.  Nice job to all.

The Athens Leadership Committee will be hosting its first car show as a charity event for the Athens Food Pantry.  There will a variety of show classes for cars, trucks, and motorcycles.  There will also be a 50/50 drawing, a silent auction, along with great food and fun.  The car show will be held here at the school on October 24th from 10:00 am till 4:00 pm.  Pre-registration for the event is $5.00 or 5 can goods. This will be collected between October 8th until October 20th.  If you have any questions be sure to contact Mr. Tobias or Kevin Cline and be sure to tell your friends and family!

Any Freshman still interested in purchasing last year’s 2009 junior high yearbook should see Mrs. Bessert.  The cost is $17.  There are limited copies; first come, first served.

Rachel Kugler swam the 200 free for the 1st time and finished 5th. Laura's and Ally's 200 Medley Relay placed 1st.  Good job girls!

Students and Faculty: Help the Athens Warrior Football Team and the Athens Football Cheerleaders raise money to benefit Easter Seals.  The football team and cheerleaders will be selling “blackout” t-shirts to wear senior night, October 16th against New Berlin.  Orders should be returned to Coach Knox by October 7th.

On Thursday October 8th, all 9-11th graders will taking standardized tests. The tests will be administered in the morning and normal classes will be held after a late lunch. Seniors will be given the opportunity to choose between three locations of interest away from school. We will take seniors to Lincoln Land Community College, University of Illinois Springfield, and Midwest Technical Institute. Seniors will be given a full tour of the programs offered at the facility of their choice.  The Buses will leave around 845am for these three locations.

Juniors:  Fannie May order forms are due back Tuesday, October 6.  If you did not get an order form last week, you may see Mr. Hughes or Ms. Lessen to get one.

Any former member who is not enrolled in an Ag. Class but wishes to be in FFA can pay $10.00 to Mr. Brown or Mr. Butler by Friday October 9th.

There will be an FFA Chapter Meeting on Wednesday October 7th at 7:00 pm in Mr. Browns room.

All NHS applications are due on Tuesday, October 6.

The boy Fresh/Soph team took 2nd place at the Olympia F/S Invite yesterday.  Patrick Richardson finished 1st for the team followed by Austin Montgomery, Jace Meints, Ted Doellman, Anthony Herr and Andy Wilson.  All runners received medals as well as a team trophy.

Girls volleyball at Riverton tonight and tomorrow.

JV golf today at Greenview for the Bulldog Invite.

Varsity soccer tonight at Rochester.  Game time is 4:30, dismiss players at 3:00.

The swim team split a meet between Olympia and Pontiac last night. Allyssa Brown placed 3rd in the backstroke and Danielle Gerard placed 4th.  Laura Penrod placed 3rd in breaststroke and 5th in butterfly and her 200 Medley Relay placed 2nd. The 200 free relay placed 3rd (Brown, Penrod, Gerard).

The Cross-country team brought home the Sprit Trophy from the El Paso-Gridley Invitational last night with an assist from the JH team.  This is a traveling trophy which we will hold this year and determine the winner of next year.  Andy Wilson and Tasha Bryant were winners of gourd awards.  Veda Dixon and Lindi Andreason placed 1st and 3rd in the open race.  Jace Meints was the first runner for the boys.  Next meet is Thursday. All Cross-country runners go to Mr. Small’s room after school for practice.

Varsity volleyball team defeated state runner up AC Central last night 25-18  25-21.  Blake Myers had 8 kills, 7 points, 2 blocks and 2 assists.  Holly Crochan had 5 kills and 5 blocks.  Laura Marley has 20 assists and 6 points.  Kristen Johnson had 3 kills and Sarah Teague had 5 kills.  The volleyball team would like to thank the great crowd support.  “You were a huge factor in our win”.  Thanks and let’s see you at the next match.  Coach Wible

Football Cheerleaders will be taking final orders for "Athens" Eye Candy by Brandy shirts at the Heritage Festival on Saturday until 2:00. We will have samples for sizing purposes. The "AHS Spirit Stop" offers face tattoos, face painting, megaphones and poms from 6:00-6:45 at home games!

 

Coach Mayfield would like to thank the Athens Football Cheerleaders for being positive role models at the Cheerleading Clinic with 96 Kindergarten thru 6th graders!  Way to go girls!  Also, AWESOME JOB on the Homecoming Activities last week!

All the girls' did a fantastic job last night at the meet. Ally Brown placed 3rd in the backstroke.  Laura Penrod placed 3rd in butterfly and 4th in the breaststroke.  Danielle Gerard swam in the 200 free relay that placed 5th.  Laura' medley relay placed 2nd. Ally's medley relay placed 4th, 200 free relay 3rd, and 400 free relay 4th.  Rachel Kugler did a best time in the 50 free.  Good meet girls'!

The swim team placed 8th Saturday at the  Peoria Woodruff Invite.  Relays placing in the top six were: 3 x 150 Relay (Schappaugh, Penrod, Tucker) 6th, 3 x 100 Medley Relay (Ishmael, Brauer, Robinson) 6th, 3 x 50 Butterfly (Thomas, Brauer, Robinson) 4th.  Good luck to the girls' Tuesday in their home meet against Chatham and Lincoln.

The Blacktop Bragging Rights Game is this Friday.  Again this year, each school is being asked to raise money for the 22 different organizations that provide support to the communities of Athens, Petersburg and Greenview.  Students are encouraged to participate in the fundraising activities for the week:

Tuesday – Hat Day  - $1 – pay in the foyer in the morning

Tuesday through Thursday -  Study Hall Challenge.  The Study Halls in both A and B that raise the most money PER student will be rewarded with a cook-out next week. 

Wednesday – We will have a Morning Cookie Break. Cookie break is a tradition that many of you may not remember.  We will have Cookie break from 950-1005am. Any student wishing to pay 1$ may go to cookie break and purchase cookies and drinks and relax for 15 minutes.

Thursday and Friday – Lunch at the Movies – Mrs. Swaney has volunteered to show a movie in Library. Any students willing to pay 3$ will be allowed to take their lunch to the library over 5a and 5b study halls and watch TWILIGHT. You must sign-up because seating is limited.

We hope that each of you will participate in at least one of these activities. Remember the money raised works in your community.

Test is for students who are interested in taking the Consumer Ed Proficiency Exam.  This test may be taken only once a year.  If a student passes, they will not be required to take Consumer Ed. during the senior year.  Only the students on the sign up list will be able to take the test.  It is limited to the first 30 students.  Sign up sheet is in Mrs. Benz’s office.

Beginning tomorrow, the varsity basketball cheerleaders will practice on Wednesday mornings at 6:30.  This schedule will continue throughout the month of September.  Please see Ms. Bice if you have any questions.

A representative from Benedictine University will meet with students during study hall today.

FCCLA is now collecting membership dues of $14.00   Please see Mrs. Slager this week for necessary paper to be filled out. This Friday at noon will be our first official meeting.  Plan to attend to learn more about the events planned for this year.

The Cross-country team competed at the Rochester Invite Saturday.  Although the girls did not have a team score the first Athens runner to finish was Lindi Andreasen.  The boy’s team finished 10th out of 20 teams.  Patrick Richardson was the first Athens boy to finish and placed 20th overall of 154 boys.  Others scorers for the team were Austin Montgomery, Jace Meints, Ted Doellman, and Anthony Herr. The Cross-country team will compete in the Rushville Invitational today.  Please dismiss students at 2:00 bus time is 2:15.

Just a reminder to teachers and students that tomorrow is the NHS blood drive. See Mrs. Swaney if you do not know what time your appointment is to give.  An NHS member will come get you for your appointment.

The Cross-country team completed their first home meet of the season against Riverton and Springfield Lutheran.  The boy’s team was 1st with Patrick Richardson finishing 1st overall.  The girls were second with Lindi Andreasen finishing first for the team and 3rd overall.  The next meet will be Saturday at the Rochester Invite.

Varsity football tonight against Pleasant Plains at Plains.  Game time is 7:00.

Journalism students who are interested in helping with the yearbook video project need to meet in Mrs. Emery’s room the last 15minutes of 5B today. 

TMD members from last year need to meet in Mrs. Emery’s room during 5A on Tuesday.  Students interested in joining TMD need to meet in Mrs. Emery’s room during 5A on Wednesday.

The boy’s varsity soccer team posted their first win last night by defeating Lanphier by a score of 3-2.  Scoring goals for Athens were: Brad Hanson, Alex Jarrard, and Dylan Parkin. The team will play Riverton at Williamsville at 10:30. Bus time is 9:15.

The senior class officers need to stop by and see Miss Bice as soon as possible.

The golf team won its first match of the season last night against Farmington.  Some top scores were Julia Browning 45, Andrew Hall 46 and Drake Cushman 54.  The JV team also won both of their matches.
