MIDTERM
Midterms will be sent out for all students who have earned at least 1 D or F. With Skyward, you have the opportunity to view up-to-date grades. Now is the time to address any grade concerns you may have with your children. Grades are determined at the semester by averaging both quarters and a final exam. Each quarter is valued at 40% and the final is valued at 20%. Poor grades can still be salvaged for the 1st quarter. In my mind, the 1st and the 3rd quarters are the most important for students. They allow them to build a solid base for whatever issues may arise in the 2nd or 4th quarters. illness, difficult material, sports or work. Many things can work to bring down grades. Having a solid passing mark for the initial quarter of each semester provides a buffer of sorts. If your student is struggling - now is the time to contact teachers, counselors and principals. Email is an unpredictable technology. If you really want to talk with a teacher call the office and leave a message plus a phone number. Finally, on a strictly personal note - If you did not receive a midterm in the mail, take the time to check Skyward.........I remember "beating mom to the mailbox" once or twice as a kid - as many of you probably do as well!
Have a great day!

Student Recognition
We all want our students to be recognized for all of their positive efforts. Positive efforts are not always related only to grades and test scores. Positive behaviors, school leadership, creativity, and service are just a few examples of positive efforts that our students should be recognized for. While we cannot recognize every student for every positive act, we can do better at recognizing as many as possible. In the coming weeks we will introduce a new program that will do just that. Check back for updates and information concerning our newest program. Blog 2
"Time."
Time is a precious thing in the lives of many families these days. I know that my time is stretched thin with work and family committments and I am sure your life is no different. There are times that we have to choose between certain events or tasks because of conflicts. I would encourage you to try and squeeze in the time to attend both Open House and Parent-Teacher Conferences. While electronic communication is easy and convenient, it often lacks a personal side. Taking a few minutes to put a name with a face and allowing others to do the same can go a long way in building cooperative relationships between teachers and parents. Open House is designed to be a time for meeting and greeting. Please save concerns about grades and classes for Parent-Teacher Conferences, which are scheduled for November. Blog 1:
"Getting Out Of The Blocks Quickly"
It is so important for students to start strong and make the correct choices early each year. Digging a hole early due to a lack of preparation, participation or completion is a sure way to find one's self struggling by the mid-term. As parents, our busy lives often lead us to trust that our older students are being responsible about homework and studying. While most students do take these responsibilities serious, some just need a bit more supervision. It only takes a few minutes to ask about HW or tests. A quick email to the counselor or your student's teachers can answer any questions you might have. With Skyward coming online within a month, you will be able to take a quick peek at your student's academic progress 24 hours a day from any computer attached to the internet. Please take a moment to talk your student(s) about the importance of "getting out of the blocks quickly." A little prodding can go a long way with your students.
