My Catfish
My Catfish
I had aquariums for a bunch of years; maybe 13 or 14. I started out with a 10-gallon tank, moved up to various 20-gallons and thereabouts, and eventually ended up with a nice big 55-gallon tank. That was great - such a big environment that, once stabilized, stayed pretty low-maintenance. But I had to leave it behind in my last move because I have no room. I had these catfish forever, it seems - since the beginning, or nearly, and for around 14 years. They were really cool, bony and prehistoric-looking. Both small when I got them, but of course they grew, Stripe moreso than Squeaky. The problem with them was that I never got to see them except on rare occasions when I'd come home late from a concert or something, not have much light on, and catch Stripe sharking slowly through the water. Till he noticed me noticing him and dashed back to his "cave". Other than that, I'd see a tail or nose poking out, but that was it; they slept all day, crammed into holes in the rocks that they'd claimed. Because I therefore never got to see them, I didn't notice that Stripe was getting deformed because he'd outgrown his chosen cave but kept insisting on going back in it. You might notice the tip of one of his fins curls back, and he has holes in them. Sometimes when I'd empty the tank to clean it, I had to just lift their rocks out with them inside because they'd jam their fins in so I couldn't get them out. So I REALLY didn't see much of them for a long time. Eventually I met a very enthusiastic guy at an aquarium store with bigger tanks than mine, and I decided they might be happier with him. He was delighted to take them in, and I barely noticed they were gone.

I've had this coat since my freshman year in college, when my mom and I found it in the boys' clearance section at Sports Authority. I wore it for almost four years, until I decided I needed something a little more hip, a little less designed-for-small-boys-even-though-it's-a-little-too-big. My friends used to call it my high visibility coat, because they could always find me at the dining hall very easily. Even though it's long since been retired, I keep it around just for days like today, because it's super water proof, has elastic inside the hood to keep it on my big head, not to mention a little brim on the hood. Plus, I'll never get run over by the pickups with the plow attachments careening through my parking lot while I'm wearing it.
