A copy of the rules will be linked here shortly: rules link Equipment Requirements As per currently proposed (awaiting ratification) NZ paragliding comps committee rules, paragliders must be models certified to LTF 1, 1-2, 2, 2-3 or EN-A, EN-B, EN-C or EN-D. According to NZ paragliding competition rules, pilots must also fly with a reserve parachute or parachutes, helmet, altimeter and back protection. If in doubt about your equipment, please contact the organisation. The competition The paragliding competition will consist of elapsed time to goal and race to goal cross-country tasks, flying from sites in the Nelson region. Sanctions will include New Zealand nationals, CIVL category 2 (for pilots with valid FAI sporting licences), and also Australian HGFA AAA competition sanction. The objective of the Nelson Paragliding Open is to host the New Zealand national championships, to provide an opportunity for New Zealand and Australian Pilots to experience competition flying in a high alpine environment not available in Australia, and to provide a venue for contesting the Australia/New Zealand Trans Tasman trophy (to be confirmed). Flight verification will be the standard for current New Zealand and Australian paragliding competitions, with 3D GPS tracklogs uploaded to Airscore. Competitors are responsible for ensuring that their own tracklog is uploaded to the Airscore server, with a wireless access point and limited instrument download facilities provided at the competition headquarters (please bring a serial or USB cable suitable for your own instrument at a minimum). Scoring system to be used: Ozgap2007 with Airscore. Registration Entry Fee: The entry fee will be NZ$140. Includes pilot pack, competition organisation, T-shirt (if paid by 31 December 2011), daily briefings including weather summary, and presentation dinner. Retrieves: The Competition organisers will provide assistance in organising a pool of retrieve drivers for retrieve teams. Teams need to provide their own 4wd vehicles due to site access requirements, although we are also putting together pricing for an optional transport service for visiting pilots (cost and details to be announced here soon.) Organisation team Competition director Hamish Barker will be assisted in pre-comp organisation, daily site selection, task setting and safety calls by (in addition to the elected pilot task and safety committees) local club members including Dean Straker (previous Nelson competition director), Tim Percival, Nick Taber and Lyn Watkins. Competition Sites All sites proposed for the competition are in the local region of Nelson, New Zealand. These sites include Mt Blowhard (2hr from Nelson, NW-NE 10+slots), Inwoods Lookout upper takeoff (1.5hr, S, 4 slots), Inwoods Lookout lower takeoff (N-NW, S, 2 slots), Mt Murchison (2.5hr, SE-NE-NW-W, 15+ slots), Barnicoat (0.5hr, N-NW airspace negotiation has secured additional airspace for the competition beyond that normally allowed due to the proximity of the airport, 10+ slots) and Havelock (1.5hr, NW, 5 launch slots).
