Because the topics covered in this conference can be difficult, overwhelming, and triggering, a word about self-care is important. During the presentations, if you find that a particular topic is causing any physiological or emotional distress (e.g., shaking, tearing or crying, freezing or "zoning out," tension, anger, sadness, anxiety, sleepiness, etc.--even a strong desire to gamble), please take a moment to notice what is going on in your body and what you need in order to cope with and decrease any distress. There will be elders who can provide smudging and trained mental health providers (watch for the Staff ribbons on name tags) who can assist you, as you desire. However, sometimes a breath of fresh air, a stretching of the limbs, or a short walk can also have a positive effect. We will have several massage therapists providing services free to conference attendees, and we encourage you take advantage of their skills during most sessions. Sign-up times will be available at the Registration Table. There will also be two informal Reflection Rooms (Wabasha 1 and Wabasha 2) in which attendees may visit for a quiet moment or even use for a Talking Circle if desired. The Tuesday evening dance exhibition and the traditional sunrise services may also provide you an opportunity for reflection and self-care. Finally, do not forget that for those staying at the hotel, you may find self-care at the Dakota! Fitness Center, or even playing a round of golf. These can be tough topics to learn and deal with, so don't forget to take care of yourself. |
