The annual MN American Indian Mental Health
Conference will be held on June 15-17, 2010 in Prior Lake, MN, at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel just 30 minutes from Minneapolis. The conference is hosted by the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis and sponsored by the MN American Indian Mental Health Advisory Council (AIMHAC) and the MN Department of Human Services.
This year’s theme, “Reconnecting the Spirit: Healing Trauma Through Self & Community," emphasizes the importance of understanding and treating trauma in order to strengthen mental health services for American Indian elders, adults, children, and families.
Objectives
This modestly-priced conference, funded by the American Indian Mental Health Block Grant, is Minnesota’s premiere opportunity to assemble and learn from regionally and nationally recognized speakers, providers and consumers in the field, Tribal and Native agencies, and others committed to improving awareness, understanding and skills from a culturally appropriate perspective in Indian Country. The conference objectives are as follows:
- Increase cultural sensitivity in providing and utilizing effective mental health services for the American Indian community;
- Understand and recognize the symptoms and effects of historical, collective,
social, micro-aggressive, micro-insult, and personal trauma; and
- Learn culturally sensitive strategies and skills to promote healing from from trauma.
The conference is designed for psychologists, social workers, teachers, counselors, therapists, psychiatrists, traditional service providers, foster and adoptive parents, community health representatives, and all other interested community members.
Cultural Activities
There will be sunrise ceremonies each morning at 7:00am in front of The Meadows restaurant on the steps facing the golf course. Tuesday evening will provide a dance exhibition by Larry Yazzie. There will be an opening ceremony on Tuesday and a closing ceremony on Thursday.
Entertainment
The conference will feature a Wednesday evening feast for all attendees and an acoustic concert by Native Grammy-winning singer Star Nayea.
Exhibitors and Vendors
The conference will feature 26 vendors and exhibitors.
Attendance Certificate and Continuing Education
All participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance. As participants complete each presentation, they receive an individual CEU Attendance Sticker upon turning in a presentation evaluation form to place on the Certificate of Attendance. Each sticker will serve as proof of attendance for training purposes and for Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Currently, we have approval from the MN Board of Behavioral Health & Therapy, MN Board of Psychology, and MN Board of Social Work.
Food
Continental breakfast each morning, coffee and snacks during the day, and Wednesday night feast are included in conference fee.
Lodging
Lodging not included, but a limited block of rooms at the special conference rate of $70.00 plus tax per night are available from Mystic Lake if you mention "2010 American Indian Mental Health Conference" when you make room reservations at 1-800-548-8536. Rooms will sell out, so book early.
