This photo illustrates how I was feeling by the time Monday rolled around. Maybe not so much a downward spiral into madness, but more like being in the eye of a hurricane and everything is just spinning around you. Vegas has that feeling - everything is flashing lights at you, beeping and chiming at you, or speaking at you, but never to you. I honestly felt like the city was draining my energy as quickly as it was extracting the moisture out of my very hands (literally...my hands were cracking and splitting...) That being said, I continued on with the classes and went to a tech tour of a central plant for the Planet Hollywood and Miracle Mile Hotel and Casino complex. I figured it'd be a really interesting look at big equipment and how they're laid out, and maybe there are ways that we could improve our own designs. What was supposed to be a three hour tour of huge and unique central plants was in fact, a 30 minute un-guided walkaround of two small mechanical rooms and not even a look at the air handlers. With my entire afternoon wasted, I was glad that a friend I had made in classes (whom we'll name R) was with me. R and I met at the Sunday ASHRAE 90.1 class. We were both alone in Las Vegas so became fast friends, and with the tour a huge disappointment, we took off to walk the Strip with nothing better to do. We visited the Miracle Mile Shops, M&M Store, the Coca Cola store, and eventually the MGM Grand where he'd be staying when his wife flew in to meet him on Wednesday. We chatted about his family and my Sweetheart, I pointed out and explained to him how Vegas was laid out, and we eventually decided to get some dinner. We ended up back at Sushi Roku, and just in time too! Happy Hour was on and R bought me a corona for my tour guide efforts, and we proceeded to consume more delicious (and certainly less costly) sushi. Being from Toronto, we talked about Canada, Global Politics and Economics, and our industry. I kind of liked the situation I was in - alone in Las Vegas for work, and though not making personal friends, but still making new and interesting human connections with people. With that finished, we parted ways as he got on the tram back to his hotel, and I walked back to Bally's where I snapped this photo on their moving sidewalks. A couple things, I thought the photo would look cool since they had these outlines in red, and if I did a handheld longer exposure, I could get it to blur into a spiral. Another - the ghostly image was in fact a guy selling tickets to nightclubs in town and gregariously asked me to "take his picture" then trying to give me some of these tickets. Uninterested, I declined then hit him point blank with a question of what it was like living in Vegas. His response surprised me - he was an Army Brat and moved around a lot (apparently this happens a lot in my discussions with other Vegas locals) and now works here to support his 3 year old daughter. He liked the town, but given their unenviable education system, he was considering moving to a different part of the country when his daughter reached school age. I thanked him for his honest reply and we parted ways, and I can't lie, I certainly hope that he does make good on moving. Written: January 3, 2011
