During the build, I repeatedly hear three questions. "How does Habitat work?" "How are families selected?" "How do you apply for a Habitat House?"
How Habitat works -
Habitat partners with families and the community (individuals, chruches, and businesses) to build simle, decent houses. Habitat works hard to hold down the cost of building. With donations of labor and "in-kind" building materials, and discounts for purchases, Habitat is able to minimize "out of pocket" costs for building houses. Home owners pay monthly payments over a 20 to 30 year period, at no interest, to repay the cost for building the house. Average monthly payments in Holston Habitat's area are typically, $300 to $400. Money from payments go to build additional houses.
How are families are selected -
Applicants go through a multi-step process to qualify to enter the program to become a home owner. First, a short application to establish need and income level. Applicants that clear the first screening fill out a more indepth application and ultimately, they meet with a Habitat Staff person for an interview. Recommended applicants are reviewed, anonomously, by the Board of Directors for approval to enter the program that leads to home ownership. Holston Habitat does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, age, handicapping condition, religion, national origin, marital status, family status or sources of income.
