    silver nitrate
  • A colorless solid, soluble in water, formerly used in photography
  • (AgNO3) is a soluble salt of silver and a corrosive compound. It produces a gray or black stain on skin. As a light-sensitive material, it is used in preparing photographic film. It is also used in making silver-based explosives and in staining biological samples for research.
  • a nitrate used in making photographic emulsions; also used in medicine as a cautery and as a topical antibacterial agent
  • Silver nitrate is an inorganic compound with chemical formula . This compound is a versatile precursor to many other silver compounds, such as those used in photography. It is far less sensitive to light than the halides.

Silver crystals forming on a thin sheet of copper
Silver crystals forming on a thin sheet of copper
Silver crystals forming on a thin sheet of copper which was inserted in to a concentrated silver(I) nitrate solution. A displacement reaction results in which the more reactive copper displaces aqueous silver(I) ions from the silver nitrate solution. A blue copper(II) nitrate solution results, as well as the production of silver crystals. This is a REDOX reaction in which copper atoms are oxidised to copper(II) ions and silver(I) ions are reduced to silver atoms. The REDOX reactions is: Cu(s) + 2 Ag+(aq) = Cu2+(aq) + 2 Ag(s)
Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire England
Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire England
Cloister walk at the amazing Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire in the west of England. This ancient abbey was where William Henry Fox Talbot invented the positive/negative photographic process, using silver nitrate and salt and then devising a way to "fix" the image permanently. I traveled there as a pilgramage, and this salt print is my homage to Talbot. Incidentally, parts of the Harry Potter films were shot in this arched walkway and adjacent rooms.
