Format & Rules

Format
  • Open matchplay tournament within a 16-player double-elimination bracket. Each round prior to the finals will consist of a best-of-5 match. The match ends when one player has clinched by winning 3 games. The winner moves on in the "Winners' Bracket". The loser reverts to the "Elimination Bracket" and continues to compete for a spot in the finals. Players are eliminated from the tournament after losing TWO matches. Ultimately two players will remain, at which point the slate is wiped clean for a best-of-7 finals to determine the 2008 Scrabble Beanpot Champion.
  • This is an unrated event. There is not a central venue. Players are responsible for arranging playing times and locations with their scheduled opponentsĀ during the specified dates. Each round will be allotted approximately 15 days for completion, as indicated on the brackets. It is recommended that an entire match is played in one sitting if possible.
  • For ease of scheduling, invitations were limited to players that live in the Boston, MA area (or reasonably close).
  • Opening round matchups were determined via a random seeding draw (World Cup style). Peak rating from 9/1/07 - 8/31/08 was used to rank players 1-16. Players ranked 1-4 comprised "Pool A", 5-8 became "Pool B", etc. The drawing slotted players into 4 "quads" on the bracket. Each quad consists of one player from each pool, matching A vs D and B vs C in the first round. Subsequent matches are determined as indicated on the brackets.
Rules
  • Standard North American tournament word list and rules are assumed.
  • Resignations are not permitted.
  • Players shall draw to start in Game 1 of each mach and alternate firsts through Game 4. In the 5th game (or 7th game in the Finals), first shall be determined by the following:
    1. Most Wins (as in the case of a match standing at 2.5 - 1.5 wins)
    2. Greater Cumulative Point Spread
  • If a match ends in a tie at 2.5 wins each (or 3.5 each in the Finals), the player with the greater cumulative point spread shall be declared the match winner.
  • In the unlikely event that a match ends tied in both wins AND cumulative point spread, an additional game shall be played as a tiebreaker.
  • It is strongly preferred that games played as part of another tournament not be counted towards Beanpot results. This is both out of respect for those events and to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.
  • The match winner shall report all game scores via email to rodmacneil@yahoo.com. Partial results from any matches not completed in one session should also be reported as soon as possible.
  • If players are unable to complete a match within the scheduled dates, the director should be notified as far in advance as possible for scheduling considerations. It will not be the policy of this event to award forfeits, but it's important to maintain the schedule as closely as possible.
