Its always sad to see a locally-owned business fail but its really pathetic when the business just could not get it right in the first place. Despite having really great pizza, this joint had the potential to stick around but failed. Why? I am not really sure why but if I was to open up a pizza place in Hapeville, I would do a few things that these guys did not. 1. Accept credit cards. It is 2005 after all and even Mickey D's takes plastic these days. 2. Maintain reasonable hours. For example, Be open on Sundays, people love ordering pizza on game day. I would get an angle on my competition by staying open late and getting some post second shift business. I remember calling this place on the day it snowed earlier this year. Since I was home, I decided I wanted some pizza. I called and someone answered the phone and informed me that Slice was closed. I found this to be annoying. If I had bothered to come into work on a day that it happened to be snowing and my job was making pizza, should'nt I do just that? 3. Deliver. If you can't compete with the Dominoes or Papa Johns down the street, why should you sell pizza in Hapeville? Hapeville is a small town and delivery would be easy. There are also quite a few hotels nearby thanks to the Airport. Advertise there & deliver. 4. Hire people with decent manners to work in the store. Surly bad-ass girls and guys with attitudes don't usually attract repeat business. 5. I would not try to open a mexican restaurant next door while my pizza place is going down the tubes. 6. Invest in a real sign. Not some hand painted piece of plywood mounted on the back of a pickup truck. 7. Don't try to sell premium draft & bottled beer in a working-class community. Nobody likes stale keg beer, keep the choices simple and stick with domestics at first, if you feel the need to test the premium beer waters, do it later when more gentrifiers move into town and your bottom line is more stable. 8. Put your phone number more places than just on the front of your store.
