Bret Hanover in the Winners Circle at The Meadows on August 12, 1965 after pacing the mile in 1:59.4. Also pictured – Tom Duran – Advertising/Marketing Director of The Meadows at left, and trainer/driver Frank Ervin in the sulky. Bret Hanover was one of the greatest race horses and sires of the 20th century. Foaled on May 19, 1962 at Hanover Shoe Farms in Pennsylvania , Bret Hanover was a son of the leading sire Adios (of Delvin Miller’s Meadow Lands Farm near The Meadows Racetrack). Notable for being the only horse to be proclaimed “Harness Horse of the Year” three times, Bret Hanover was also one of only nine pacers to win harness racing’s Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Pacers - with victories in the Little Brown Jug (setting 6 world records), the Cane Pace and the Messenger. He achieved a career total of 62 wins in 68 starts, and never placed worse than third. As a two-year-old in his 1964 debut racing season Bret Hanover was undefeated in 24 races, and in his 1965 second season won 11 more in a row before being bested by Adios Vic in August at Springfield. Bret Hanover had “personality” as well – crossing his front legs and bowing to the crowd in the winners circle after each win, and known for his liking of Brach Candy’s Starlight Mints. At many tracks he was known as the “Peppermint Kid,” or “Big Bum,” an affectionate name given to him by trainer/driver Frank Ervin. Bret Hanover died in November of 1992 at the age of 30. Additional note: notice that the grandstand area is in its original form - open to the air. The grandstand was built with only the Clubhouse dining area enclosed in glass, with the grandstand seating area enclosed with glass later.
