1:72 MiG-21bis, Indian Air Force "C 2113", 15th Squadron 'Flying Lances', late 90ies (Condor kit) - Detail view
This kit was a spontaneaous project - I got hands on a MiG-21 book (Mikoyan-Gurevitch MIG 21: Fishbed 1955-2010 from the „Planes and Pilots“ series, written by Gerard Paloque) which features lots of side view illustrations of this famous plane, and among other weird/exciting liveries there was THIS fighter: machine "C 2113" from the Indian Air Force. This plane is/was real, and its flashy livery was applied because this MiG-21bis was used in air combat training. There are many other sister machines with colored tail fins, blue dots, red tiger stripes, etc., but none looked as spectacular as C 2113! The kit and its assembly Surely, no kit is available, so the exterior had to be improvised. As a basis I also did not want to spend lots of money, so I settled on a MiG-21bis kit from Condor, a Ukraine-based company. The Condor kit is one of so many derivates from the old Kovozavody kit - it is basically not a bad model of the MiG-21 MF and similar late versions. Surfaces have very fine engravings, but production quality (flashes, thickness of some filigrane parts) offers lots of room for improvement. Worst thing is that my box contained the fuselage and clear parts of a MiG-21-93, and the interior sprue for a two-seater! Decals would also not match with the box art, and they proved to be very thin and flimsy. Well, you get what you pay for... This left me with lots of scratch work. Even though the spectacular livery was supposed to be the focus of attention, I wanted to (at least) correct the worst flaws. Not that the model would be perfect - but using simple, featureless "sticks" as main landing gear parts or gluing something what looks like a jet fan into the exhaust nozzle was nothing I could live with. I improvised a new jet nozzle with leftover parts form an F-18 kit - effectively, there little to see on the finished rear fuselage, but I would neither accept a gaping hole, nor the "plate" which would sit 3mm behind the exhaust opening! Lead was placed in the fuselage nose for stabilisation purposes, since the kit would be built with extended landing gear. The cockpit features a dashboard and side consoles, but the cockpit "tub" does not fit well into the fuselage parts. The kit also did not include the right ejection seat, so I used a replacement piece from the scrap box, and I added a pilot figure in order to distract from the self-made instruments and the poor fit of the cockpit... The front wheel has almost no similarity with the original, so I replaced it with scrap pieces, too. The same goes for the complete main landing gear - the wheels are nice, but the rest is rubbish. A nice detail of the kit are the very thin wings and stabilizers, and they fit well. To add some life to the later model (which would later be displayed on the ground) I lowered the landing flaps and moved the side rudder from neutral position. Small things, but they add realism. The clear parts are not clear at all, and their sprue is very thick. I had a hard time cutting the cockpit canopy parts without breaking. As a positive aspect, the landing lights (placed under the wings, behind the main landing gear wells) are included as clear parts, too, a nice detail. For some fine-tuning I cut off the IFF antennae under the front fuselage and on the fin, replacing them with thin sprue threads and cutting them to size. Two additional small antennae at the front were also added, as typical IAF MiG-21bis details. Painting It is not only the bright yellow main color of this machine - there are also other spectacular colors mixed into the whole picture. You have a cockpit interior in bright Russian Interior Green, with a pilot in khaki drab. The front shock cone as well as some antennae parts are bright dark green, and then you have the Indian insignia with orange and green, as well as a squadron emblem with red. The main gear is held in an ugly mix of olive drab and aluminium. I am not certain if this is correct - pictures I consulted also show blank aluminium, mid grey and even bright blue as potential colors! Another thing I also wanted to take onto the kit was a slightly weathered look. There is an official IAF picture of C 2113 in flight to find which shows the air combat training markings flaking away, esp. around the rear fuselage, and the machine sports a light haze of dirt and use. Concerning the black dots I was able to determine that both fuselage and fin sides are symmetrical, but there is no valid picture of the upper and lower sides of the main wings or the stabilizers. The material I have at hand suggests that the dots are only placed on the fuselage. All horizontal wing areas seem to be completely yellow, while the weapon stations are aluminium. The front part of the fuselage looks like a very light grey, or weathered aluminium which whitens out with time. In order to achieve the flake look, I decided to paint the fuselage in layers. As an initial step I primed
