Information board at the Archaeological Museum in Milan describing the silver plate found in Parabiago. The plate was discovered in 1907 in the town of Parabiago, near Milan. The shape of the plate recalls the platters used in sacred ceremonies for libations on altars but its complex ornamentation - which celebrates the victories of Cybele and Attis in the presence of the gods of time - makes it truly exceptional and of great symbolic value. Such a precise choice of subject would suggest an interpretation of the plate as a type of ideological manifesto which can be inserted into the cultural framework of the second half of the 4th century CE when certain intellectual circles in the ruling classes, with strong ties to Classical culture, tried to restore the pagan cults as opposed to the Christian religion.
