A Convicted Adulteress
A Convicted Adulteress
This is the old mugshot photograph of a woman named Angelica Sonoqui (inmate #2942) who was sentenced to serve four months at the Yuma Territorial Prison in the Arizona Territory on March 4, 1909 for the crime of adultery. Mrs. Sonoqui was born about 1880 and was a resident of the city of Tucson. She journeyed North to Maricopa County where she became romantically involved with a man named Jose Montoyo in 1908. She was still married at the time that she began her romantic fling with Mr. Montoyo. The couple were arrested in Maricopa County later that year for the crime of adultery. The judge set their bail at $200.00 each; however, neither one could afford it so they both spent almost four months in jail awaiting their trial. Witnesses were summoned by the court and each was paid $3.00 a day for their testimony. Their testimony was enough to convince the court of their guilt, so the judge sentenced them accordingly. Although both were found equally guilty, Mr. Montoyo was sentenced to a term in prison twice as long as his co-defendant. Mrs. Sonoqui was described as being illiterate, less than five feet in height, and with a weight of about 100 pounds. She was further described as having a "head size of six and one quarter," foot size of three and one half, dark brown eyes, black hair, dark complexion, and good teeth. She was further described as being a "temperate woman" who did not use opium. Her occupation was listed as being a "washer woman." I have been unable to find her whereabouts after she completed her sentence. The Yuma Territorial Prison was in operation in the Arizona Territory from 1876 until 1909.
