The hike back After hiking in our flip-flops in the morning to a beach on the other side of the island Ilha Grande, we hopped into a small boat owned by a fisherman to make our way back to the only "town" on the island. As the boat made its way, the waves got bigger and bigger. Theresa and I sat at the bow and were laughing our heads off as the boat bobbed up and dove down continuously--it was like a roller coaster! At one point we looked back at the others on the boat--they were stone-faced and solemn. the captain decided to turn back--a 45 minute trip back to shore. It was near sundown--we had to decide whether to hike back or to wait to see if the waters calmed down. If we waited, we risked being stranded at darkness. We hiked back--in our sandals. By the looks of this photo, you might say Theresa would have preferred to take the boat back. Day 125 - 2 Jul 08 - Fighter plane found on Kenyan coastal beach
I found this little plane in the sand along a 12km stretch of isolated beach. Funny to think he may have come from anywhere - debris from all around the world ends up on these beaches - there is even a flip-flop empowerment project where local women collect flip flops washed up on the beach and re-use them to make jewlery, drink coasters and other varied items - on sale at massively inflated prices.
